i rarely have a Friday night that i like these days, because while i used to hold them sacred, fridays aren't really the night to go out in the gay community. That's what Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays are for.
Last night Girl wanted to hit up the East End Fest with me and her friend Anna. Anna brought her husband along (the two really don't belong together; she doesn't want him and is mostly gay) and their other guy friend. Girl also invited another friend who used to perform. Later we met up with a couple of other girls at a straight bar.
When we got there, we saw my friend's band playing, so that was cool.
Contrary to what i'd previously thought, the Fest was one night only, so the place was fucking PACKED. Straight people as far as the eye can see. Now, don't get me wrong. i have nothing against them, but i WAS feeling *quite* outnumbered, which is not something i've been used to for the past few years. i was able to count only 7 "family" members in the crowd, my group included.
We had a lot of fun, though. Saw the Young Dubliners (i think that was the band's name), an Irish punk band in the grand tradition of Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys. A bunch of drunken people danced Irish (badly) and moshed a bit; it was pretty funny to watch :D i ended up buying the band's CD.
During that show, one major thing sticks out in my mind: Girl was talking with her King friend, and they were joking about fighting with me, but Girl turned it serious for a minute and told her flat out, "No, cuz if you try to hurt her, i'll kick your ass." She then started whispering in the other woman's ear, and i turned my attention back to the band; no doubt she was explaining our status. i think it made my heart melt, just to know that she still has intentions toward me, still likes me, and that it might pain her to not be "with" me. i got all girly-fuzzy-woozy, hehe.
After the Fest ended, we walked over to SoHo. The place was also PACKED; we had practically no room to move. We all ended up by a railing on the large upstairs patio. The music was horrible, and and most of the straight girls were either getting smushed by big straight guys, or trying to push their way through the crowds to talk on their mobile phones. Our group stayed in a tight little circle.
One of the finer points of being on that patio was that during one of the songs, this Kuwaitian, little, thin, GORGEOUS girl started dancing, and you could tell it was a cultural dance. She danced with another girl, and it was VERY fun to watch. The two ended up directly behind Girl, who also started dancing with one of her friends, so i got a REALLY nice show *grin* The Kuwaitian started giving another girl dance lessons, so i watched that too so i could learn.
After a while, the gays felt a little tired of the overcrowded straight scene with bad music, so Girl, me, and King left to go check out our favorite gay bar. Nothing was going on, so we didn't even order drinks. We stayed maybe 10 minutes, and by that time it was after 1am, so i drove Girl home.
All in all, a fun night. i think i'm done with festivals for a while, even though i might end up at the County Fair (NEVER thought i'd say THAT!) and/or the Ren Fair. i've always wanted to go to the Ren Fair, but never had the time or money. Next weekend's theme is Pirates!! YARRGGH!! hehee.
Time to go clean out my car! woot...
