Funny how much tv really can shape your life.
While I have never been a master of Super-Duper Cable, able to wield its 500+ channels with the wave of my remote-controlled hand, I am nonetheless a big fan of tv. I love good movies, watching crap shows with my friends, the noise it makes when you're the only one home, the veg-out possibilities when you've had a shit day at work. Even if it would be boring BBC, I would still watch it, and love complaining about it.
But we don't have super-duper cable. We don't even have basic. Not even an antenna. And that's because we don't even own a tv. A box of wonder does not even reside in our household. I think about it when I come home at night and don't want to do anything but veg. So what do I do? I listen to a lot of music, and read A LOT. Since Sunday I have read five books. For trivia's sake they were: Lolita(one of my top ten), My Drowning (not bad), The Curious Incident of the Dead Dog or something (very funny), Cloven Hooves (amazing), and About a Boy. While only one of these I would consider difficult, the rest were at least very entertaining. Jordan reads like crazy, too. I was always a reader, and I'm glad I'm into regular reading again, but it still gets a little boring and you can't quite connect with someone as much as you can with tv, in case they don't want to be interrupted.
We keep discussing getting a tv, but something stops us from borrowing one or buying a cheapo. Jerbs said he doesn't really even miss it anymore, and I'm surprised by how much I still do. I mean, King of Cable, Prince of Xena, Duke of MTV, Lord of Westminster Dog Show "doesn't really miss it anymore"!!! What is wrong with me? However, I have become a lot more creative because of it's absence. I've gotten back into my art projects (which I have never thought to go beyond my own enjoyment), had a lot of great talks with the now-abdicated Sovereign of T.V., and taken some very good walks. I don't know. I'd still sell my soul for a t.v. and excellent video library, but I can't seem to pay £40 for the possibility. Hmmmm.
Love, Kristin
