In my experience, what killed LJ was all those weird site design updates that made nearly every other person on my flist migrate to Dreamwidth. (Then a year or so later, we all started moving to Tumblr. Now Tumblr has started rolling out weird site design updates. So it goes.)
I think I missed some of the weird site design updates. All I know is it's different now than it was -- though maybe not as much as I would have expected. It still feels fundamentally like LJ. Tumblr, on the other hand, is cray. I think LJ is the best-run social media site I've ever been on. Which is actually kind of an astonishing indictment of the other ones.
Dreamwidth is doing pretty great as far as I can tell! It remains solidly "like LJ if LJ had made way better decisions about which parts of its site design to improve and how", and my DW reading list is more active than my LJ friendslist by a noticeable amount.
Really? Very interesting. I thought long-form blogging had had its day. I'd say that I might make a DW and crosspost there but I don't know which of my old friends might have gone over there and what their usernames might be, and it's the old friends I miss.
Also, when I log into DW I usually stay logged in afterward for longer than an hour. LJ doesn't seem to be into that. (I totally just left an anonymous comment by accident because I assumed I would still be logged in from this morning.)
LOL I figured that anonymous comment was you, but I didn't know LJ was logging people out after an hour. That is not a very good decision. Also I like your icon and the dude's expression.
Yeah, the most annoying thing about keeping up with LJ by far is that *every* *single* *time* I want to check my friendslist, I have to go to my friendslist and then manually log in. I always check "Remember me". It never seems to help.
Also I was just about to say that crossposting from Dreamwidth to Livejournal works really well, except then I checked and it turns out my last few DW posts haven't crossposted. So I guess I'll go investigate that. LJ probably broke it around the time their login process became more of a pain.
Update: Crossposting from DW to LJ seems to be functional! Maybe I changed my password and forgot to update my crosspost settings? I have no idea. Here is my adorably bewildered icon again.

I wonder how Dreamwidth is doing these days.
