Reminds me of an argument I had with a Green Peace person.pecosdaveOctober 13 2004, 09:37:08 UTC
Occasionally here in downtown Houston a member of Greenpeace will start talking at you on the street corner about how horrible this or that is. One of them told me how much air pollution was caused by nuclear power

Thanks for the link. I was actually thinking of another article that I still don't remember enough to get a link for. But it was Moore there too, recommending that we get nuclear fast, for the sake of the environment. He believes in Global Warming and that burning stuff to make power is stupidly wrong.
Not sure that Id agree with this: "He argues that the Amazon rain forest is doing fine, that the Three Gorges Dam is the smartest thing China could do for its energy supply" - although the last phrase qualifies the 3 Gorges argument ... The Amazon rain forest is being burnt off at a rate of knots that is terrifying, and its not regrowing - thats a bit difficult when the topsoil (and tree seeds) gets washed away the first time it rains. Chinas power issues might need the 3 Gorges dam, and hydro electricity is a whole lot cleaner than anything else, but Im still not sure it was a good idea for the ecology ...

I would argue that the collapse of China economy isn't real good for the ecology either. With that power, they can maintain the economic progress and then have the funds to implement compensatory solutions. Without it, they'll go back to burning fossils. Arguably, they could build more nuclear plants. But, it's back to my basic premise and doing without "civilisation" is going to be a difficult pitch to make to the Chinese government. Given that they need to bring China into the 21st century, how else are they going to do it?
