So i'm curious as to what everyone thinks about the bailout package. We've been obsessed with it here in Mumbai.

i've got mixed feelings on it to be sure. we have a ton to lose if the stock market goes belly up or if more banks start going under. (But we are breathing a bit easier today since Ireland has said they would insure all deposit accounts with no limit! So if you have any money above 100,000 go there!)

i pay ridiculous taxes and i don't make anything! last year i made 4,448 USD and had to pay 1400 in SS (granted, not really taxes, but whatever!) And i really don't mind paying taxes as long as I know it is going to something beneficial for the country as a whole. obviously my slant would be education or mental health care or just regular health care!

as for the bill... i just keep thinking... if a regular person gets themselves into a financial crisis, they have few options to help them out of it and the govt is certainly not one of them. They are left to deal with the consequences. I would rather help out regular americans than huge businesses that knew damn well what they were doing and how risky it was.

And I feel that America(n's) have over extended themselves and there needs to be a correction for that. the consumerist culture has gotten way out of hand. people who can't afford houses were lured into buying them. if you can't come up with the 10% down.. you need to wait a bit longer to buy or you need to find a cheaper house!

Before the great depression people's debt was 1 to 3 (for ever 1 dollar you made, you had 3 in debt) now it is 1 to 5.

but the biggest thing I don't like about this whole thing.. is the fear mongering. Paulsson said that if it wasn't passed the market would crash. Yeah it went down a shitload..but it's on it's way up. it's showing resiliance and thats the way it should be. Lets take some time and get it right is what i feel. up the FDIC for sure to protect regular americans.. do something to help out those cashing in their 401Ks next year.. but lets wait on the corporate bailouts -- all this from someone who is normally so socialist it hurts :)
