so sad..

i just found out today that one of the new hires at Dasra died this weekend. I only knew him for a few weeks before I went to the US and then of course I no longer work there, so didn't see him again.

Baharul was in Tamil Nadu as part of Dasra's new policy of sending all new hires out there for 6 weeks to learn about what goes on there and interact with the staff there. about 2 weeks ago he and parthiban (who i used to travel with a ton in TN) were riding parthiban's motorcycle to the train station to buy tickets for their next work trip, when a dog ran out in front of them. swerving to avoid the dog, they flew off the bike and crashed. (Still hitting the dog - who apparently ran off). As they were in the middle of traffic a truck couldn't stop in time and ran over Baharul stopping just before it got to Parthiban.

Baharul has been in the hospital ever since with broken ribs and a punctured lung. they thought he was stable, but he was still not able to breathe on his own. but apparently he's had a couple of strokes and the third one friday night was the end for him.

i didn't know him well, but i still feel devastated. i have been on that bike, been on those roads with parthiban and can only imagine the image that parthiban is left with.

it has really sent dasra into a tailspin -- the body had to be taken by their staff to Calcutta and then onwards to Baharul's hometown way in the northeast area of assam. Deval and another former collegue have gone on to Baharul's family leaving everyone else to figure out what to do and how to move on.

This is a scary reality of living in India. I was only on the back of a motorbike today with a real estate broker - always fearing for my life. Paul and I saw a bad wreck just last week too - a motorcycle.

the only consulation i can give myself is that when it is your time to go, it is your time and it doesn't matter where in the world you are or what you are doing. but i still wonder why such a young guy with so many future plans could have been taken away so soon.

as my former collegue dhruv said on his IM note - death makes me wonder the reason for my existence.
