Character Information

General
Canon Source: Supernatural
Canon Point: Pre-8x01 (during the year he spent in Purgatory).
Character's Name: Dean Winchester.
Character's Age: 33.

Appearance/PB:

Jensen freaking Ackles; Standing at 6'1", compared to his little brother, Dean is easily dwarfed in size. The hunter is more of a lean man than pure muscle. He has dirty blonde (borderline brown) hair that is kept short, and green eyes. Dean's most remarkable features are the freckles on his face and the style of clothing he has; his manner of dress mirrors his father's -- a brown leather jacket, plaid print shirts, and jeans.

Abilities:

Canonly, Dean has no super-human abilities. He just seems to have nicely toned abilities in the pre-existing gifts of adaptability and fighting. Dean is a better fighter than someone would find on the street. As a kid, he was taught the hard way about most things that most people would either think they saw in a Lifetime movie or some sort of dramatic television show. He was trained, like a soldier, how to fight, lie, and disappear. Being raised in a nomadic lifestyle, Dean's easiest lesson was never to get attached to people, and he prides himself in the ability to keep himself emotionally detached from people that are not his younger brother (or any sort of individual he considers family). When it comes to hand-to-hand combat, Dean isn't exactly Mike Tyson, but he can take the hits just as well as he can dish them. With his quick thinking Dean does have the street smarts to pick up on his surroundings to use them to his advantage.

Even though he doesn't come off as the most intelligent individual in the room, Dean retains information he learns rather well, and picks up on the smallest things to tip him off in an occupation that relies entirely on him being able to piece together a puzzle. Because of that, he functions similarly to a detective when it comes to hunting down the creatures he's looking to kill. When a weapon is in his hands, Dean is downright lethal. Before he was brutally ripped to pieces by Hellhounds, Dean's abilities with weapons had never harmed an innocent person. He used them ruthlessly on demons, making the assault with a variety of weapons, from something like a handgun to something as simple as a crossbow; growing up his father had insured that he and his little brother would have knowledge in every weapon they could possibly get their hands on because they would never know what they were facing.

During his stint in Hell, Dean developed a sort of apathy for other individuals' plights. Under Alastair's tutelage he has become quite skilled in torture. The hunter is putting all of the 'issues' he had when he was topside on his victims in Hell in new, innovative ways. He'll use anything as a torture device, from scalpels to pencils. Beginning to torture souls in exchange for being taken off the rack was a choice. Dean's imagination is the key to his success when it comes to the violence he committed in Hell; he became one of the most remarkable individuals to torture others.

Dean has also become quite the exorcist. He has memorized the exorcism spell as well as several banishing rituals for getting rid of demons and angels alike. Over his year in purgatory, Dean has also grown accustom to a gritter way of fighting as well as a more ruthless way of it. He'll stab you in the back if it means his survival and won't have any qualms with it.

Inventory:

  • The clothing he wore when he was sent to Purgatory. A little dirtier than before. But whatever.
  • A handgun. No extra bullets.
  • A make-shift hatchet.
  • A bowie knife. Never leave home without it.

    Character Personality:

Dean has more of a layered cake personality than he allows to be seen by most people, much of which he does not allow anyone see. Most people who meet Dean believe they know the man behind the mask right off the bat. Outwardly, Dean is a charismatic man with a devil may care attitude. His main agendas seem to be clear when it comes to the subject of what he wants to do in life, whether that's killing demons, sleeping with women, or protecting his little brother. The eldest Winchester brother practically radiates confidence where ever he goes -- even when he makes a goof or ends up in an awkward position. He's particularly well-known for the pop culture references that he tends to make to lighten the mood or just to feel more superior in his ability to get a reaction out of people (or just in his ability to get people to look at him as if he's insane). Essentially, Dean is a headstrong man who doesn't exactly know what he wants out of life but acts like he does. Initially, Dean's first method of emotional defense is to lie - and he lies extremely well. Most of the time, Dean comes off as pretty damn sexist. Especially when it comes to hunting and having women attempt to establish themselves as a higher rank or status than he is. He has a superiority complex, which makes being a hunter kind of an easy occupation for him; he can take his frustrations out on the things that he kills.

He's a natural flirt. Just put Dean in a room with a beautiful woman and he's bound to make the attempt to get into her pants - with an eighty percent success rate. Dean mostly comes off as someone who is full of himself - and he is. When it comes to his views of women, he's got more of a standard view that most people would object to; he acknowledges that women have taken dozens of steps forward in establishing themselves to be just as strong as men, he just doesn't believe they're capable of half the things that men do. Like many male hunters, Dean doesn't believe there's really a place for women in their line of work and looks down on them when they try. It appears (at least outwardly) that he accepts female hunters, but Dean really can't step out of the mentality that he has taken with them. To be honest, Dean thinks they're too emotional and too eager to prove themselves to the rest of the world. It's something that he believes could ultimately end up getting people killed if they take too much of a "running in guns a' blazing" approach to a situation just because they want to prove that they can. Overall, Dean's views on women are very clear -- he objectifies them and he isn't going to lie if someone tries to point this trait out to him.

Dean's not a two dimensional sort of person. When people initially meet him after meeting his father, most would claim that they are one in the same (even if it's only because Dean has spent his entire life as John Winchester's shadow, becoming a mirror image of him). Everything that's Dean's is relatable to his father in some way. From the obsessive attitude he has toward his job to the loyalty he has to his family, Dean shows several of the classic signs of someone who has endured years of emotional abuse, mainly through his apathy towards everyone who isn't who his father. It seems as if no one ever taught him to connect with people on more than a physical level. The hunter, at first glance, can come off as someone who is open to inviting people into his life, but he honestly feels no real connection with anyone who isn't family. Through the losses he has endured in his life, Dean has taught himself to remain emotionally disconnected to save himself from dealing with grief and pain on a level deeper than he's prepared for. Emotionally, Dean cannot handle it. He tends to take on everyone's problems as his own or make them his own in some way if he gets too close to someone, and if something happens to them, he takes it one as a personal failure that he has to live with. In lieu of that, Dean's loyalty isn't given out as easily as it would be with family or long-standing friends. His trust is something that is earned over time, if someone is lucky enough to be given enough of a chance to get to that point.

Through, and because of, certain life experiences (the most prominent being with the demon known as Azazel), Dean has become someone who is highly protective of the people he has around him - especially his little brother Sam, who is also his hunting partner and best friend. Dean's life choices seem to constantly be connected to Sam, but somehow still separate from him in some way or another. Outwardly, it seems that Dean couldn't be more of a polar opposite to his brother, but the real reason why they connect so well is because they share a common bond. At its core, that bond is their shared childhood. Half of the time, the only reason that they survived the life experiences they both went through was because they had each other. Trouble seems to plague them most when they're apart. Because of that, Dean is... dangerously codependent on Sam in many ways. Whenever he's on a case without his brother it's almost as if he's missing a step in his walk. Before retrieving Sam from Stanford three years ago, Dean was pretty much walking a dangerously thin line, with a pretty high chance of getting killed on every hunt he went on that only got worse after he and his father had parted ways. In more ways than one, Dean never felt as betrayed by his brother as he did by his dad for Sam walking away from their family (which was brought on by John pushing Sam away). The hunter felt... abandoned. Because of the fact that he lost his little brother to the "apple pie life", he also felt alone in being proud of him for getting away, especially because he felt like he was a hopeless case.

As a hunter, Dean is highly adaptable to any situation he's put in. Most of the time, he has to think of things on the fly, especially when it comes to while he's looking up information on a hunt. One of the many skills he has developed is the ability to lie with a straight face to anyone, including his younger brother (despite how close they are). Because of his gift of gab, Dean's wittiness is a staple to how he actually is as a person. People don't automatically think of Dean Winchester as a 'nice' guy or a gentleman, but as someone with a quick tongue that can dish out just as many insults as anyone can give him.

Dean is a very goal orientated person, particularly when it comes to the work he does. His job has become his life over the years, which seems to be exactly what John wanted out of his boys - to make sure they were prepared for what could happen if they failed at making sure demons didn't get too out of hand (even if it seems like they have played a bigger hand in things than what their father had originally intended). Dean tries to work through his job with a shit-eating grin but for the most part, the job he has dedicated his life to is not what he wants, or what he's always wanted, out of life. Dean's "family man" persona is usually something that he tries to hide, but the man is a paternal individual when it comes down to it. This is most evident when someone looks at his relationship with his younger brother. Dean comes off as more of the embodiment of humanity throughout the series which is supposed to balance out how off-base his little brother seems to be a lot of the time.

To most people, figuring Dean's surface-self out is rather easy. They can look between the two brothers and figure out which one seems to run the show when it comes to things that require intelligence (Sam), but Dean is quite adept on level with his little brother, if not moreso. He's just apt to show it in a significantly different way. Dean is...socially retarded at best; his input on a situation takes most people by surprise, especially with some of the things he says (including his brother) when it comes to the assumption that he's the brawn and his brother's the brains. It's more of a level playing field between the both of them. One of his clearest attributes is Dean's loyalty to his family. It is something that has continuously been his driving force in the work that he does, to the point where he feels as though he fails at his life mission if he lets his little brother down in any way, shape, or form. Because of this, Dean's self-sacrificing nature comes into play which ultimately led up to his recent demise and first class ticket to Hell. Dean's somewhat blind to the mistakes his brother makes, or he accepts them on the fly and just goes through them -- though he is quick to call Sam on it. Dean's a particularly hard person to crack when it comes figuring out his personal opinions, as he likes to be quiet about the endeavors he goes through or the problems he deals with. The hunter is an extremely private person..

Dean's personality seems to take more of a one-eighty flip when after his resurrection. The hunter is colder, more callous, and knows what experiences actually lay in wait for him after death. During his time in Hell, Dean was more honest with himself about the self-hatred he experienced throughout his life (for not being so much as an individual as much as he was his father's puppet) than he'd ever been before he died. After he was pulled from the rack, he would take this out on his victims with a sick pleasure that could only be frowned greatly upon. Dean's views on humanity shaded into something that was more twisted and since Hell has no rules, he was given the ability to act on his hatred towards humanity rather than hide it away as he usually would've had to. This simply pushed him more toward becoming just as bad as the people (and the demons) he had judged on many occasions, based on their not having enough common sense not to torture or ruin the lives of people that surrounded them. Dean's still very much stuck in the state of mind that what he is doing is what needs to be done to keep him off the rack, but is likely to show as much remorse as the entirety of a liquor bottle allows him to show once he realizes what's actually happened and what he really did. Since his stint in Hell, Dean's more closed off than ever before, especially when it comes to recounting what he was forced to undergo down in the basement. This is something that could potentially gum up the works of him creating personal relationships with anyone, and something that he'll be struggling with.

His relationship with Castiel is one that is something he has never had with any of the people in his life. Cas has been one of the individuals he trusts the most, regardless of the continuous betrayals from his friend. Dean does value Castiel's friendship above anyone else's because of the loyalty he has shown him. But above anything, he'd still look all over purgatory for his geek angel. They do, after all, share a profound bond.

[ The video flickers on and he's just staring at the screen for a brief moment, looking deep in thought before it shuts off. Moments later it turns back on and he's running his hand down his face, taking in a deep breath and giving a little smirk. ]

Well, guess it didn't take too long to get back into the land of the living. Even if this isn't what I'm usually used to. [ He glances around the room he's in. ] Yeah, nothin' special. There's no mystery stain on the bed so thank whatever for small blessings. I don't know what's going on here but I was told if I tried moving around at night then I might get killed. So to do myself a favor, I'm listening...for once. I'm not planning to make it a habit of it. [ He smiles more to himself than to the camera. ] Sammy'd would put this down in his diary as a first, maybe take a picture...put it in a photo album. Somethin' girly like that.

[ Clears his throat as he sits forward, looking a bit worse for wear. ] I don't know how the Hell I got here and as much as I don't wanna have a Real World moment on everyone with this video diary shit. I just know I need to get outta here if this is how it's gonna be. [ Not like he actually believes this is real. He thought Alastair actually stopped messing around with him like this. ] I don't do curfews. Safety reasons or not. [ He shakes his head before just turning off the video. ]

His body was just making the initial lunge forward, and he expected there to be a lot more screaming than there had been. Dean honestly didn't really care for the girl that had been on the hooks in front of him. The rusty metal dug into her meat the same as it had done to him nine years prior, and the miserable fucks that had followed before them both. He didn't sympathize with them. He didn't feel pity. He was just doing what he thought was fun... for once. Hell had started to creep into his thoughts in a way that nothing ever had before - even in a way that his father's "training" never had. It wasn't exactly bringing him up to another level as much as it was taking him down a notch. Alastair would say it was taking him off the pedestal and making him walk with the real animals. Like Hell it was (sometimes with the pun intended). Dean didn't believe a single word that spilled from his teacher's lips, and for good reason. Alastair was still a demon; Dean was still his bitch student. The former hunter had become something of a prodigy. Even though his humanity hadn't been completely ripped from him, he was sometimes more brutal with his ministrations of torture than the demons themselves. But that usually wasn't the worst part of it.

The worst part was dealing with the realization that someday, Sam could possibly save him from this. Even if the thought only crept in once or twice every couple of years, it bothered him. What he had left behind topside had stayed right where it was. Topside. Dean knew the impossibility of being brought back to life, so he knew, or rather he thought he knew, that he had all the time in the world.

His views on relating with demons remained just as he viewed it before - trusting a demon was like trusting a rabid dog. It didn't take long for Dean to realize the change in his surroundings. The smell of sulfur wasn't rank in the air; in fact, it wasn't in the air at all. There was nothing that pointed to the fact he'd spent forty years in Hell. There was just him, standing there like a chump. The hunter blinked for a brief moment, expecting something to come at him with some sort of weapon and rip him in half. But nothing happened. Dean didn't think it was reality at first, but the initial reaction of pinching himself was a moot point if Alastair was behind it. He just stood in the middle of the darkened field, a little dazed and very confused before he heard the slight shuffle around him. He didn't exactly see what was there at first, because as much as he'd like to convince himself otherwise, he didn't have night vision. He just knew that he was not alone. Fear was not a thing he was used to feeling as of late, especially when it came to things of the unknown variety, but a chill ran down his spine at the idea of being attacked, defenseless, in the darkness. He initially thought it really was something Alastair cooked up, before he looked forward and saw a light. If this was Heaven's way of apologizing for screwing him over big time, they were forty years too late. But that didn't stop Dean from moving his aching, protesting body; he was very aware of the fatigue that hadn't manifested itself during his stint in Hell. Again, something was happening that tipped him off to the fact that this wasn't something his teacher was doing.

It wasn't until halfway through his run did he realize that whatever he heard in the field was moving after him. Dean's heart started to pound as he pushed his body to move forward. As many times as he had died already, he wasn't prepared to die again.
