In reference to phoenixhime's this post.

I saw the news in Nico too... Hmm.

I personally think that there are really some songs that humans cannot sing. There are so many songs that I would rather listen to vocaloids sing instead of humans. Like, there are many songs that after listening to covers, good covers even, I end up liking Miku's version best. Also, stuff like cosMo-tan's CD (which is one of the best concept-based Miku CDs around IMHO) would never have appeared on earth if there wasn't Miku around. In a sense, Miku is what makes something that haven't been possible with human vocals possible. For this alone, I think Miku (and all other Vocaloids) as a software DOES deserve whatever credit it is getting.

And I am against the view of saying that vocaloid songs aren't a piece of artistic work. Because it boils down to the point that vocaloids are in the end, a musical instrument just like any synthesizer in terms of how it works, and I don't think that music done by a synthesizer is any less a piece of artistic work than one by a non-electrical musical instrument.

I think it's more sad that drama cds (Code Geass and Gundam 00) are selling better than normal song CDs compared to Miku winning in a sense =.=

And regarding why Miku is coming up on the charts, it's just pure economics. It just means that the people who like mainstream or near-mainstream music just don't have the spending power, or they are just spending on other stuff. It just means that people who like Miku are more willing to pay for CDs even though they have heard the songs countless times on the net. In reality I know so many people who would pay to see the singers they like IRL but not pay to buy their CDs.

And I would like to say that a lot of ppl who buy Miku CDs are willing to pay because of the compositions etc and NOT Miku's voice. Feelings or not, consumers have the choice to choose what songs they like regardless of who or what is singing it. Or you should say, when the singing voice is the same, the level of the composition is even more obvious. It just simply means that even with a voice that has no feelings the songs are still better than whatever mainstream pop is out there.

In which a huge factor is commercialisation I guess. There are so many fantastic composers out there, but they are just controlled by record companies who want normal and commercialised stuff that would sell. I personally think if vocaloid composers started working in the music industry their creativity would be at least half-killed by the companies. I'm sure people in the V-kei scene knows that as well because the same thing happens to their industry. Should I say that it's a sign to music companies that people are looking towards more diversity in music and that it's the end to "pop culture"? Or that people immersed in pop culture are in the end, just casual listeners.

And regarding having emotions in the singing voice. How many singers through whose songs you can feel real emotions and just not plain skill or there lack of? Especially in J-pop. In that aspect I would rather Miku get top instead of some random idol groups, including JE, despite me being still quite a fan.

vocaloid, rant
