Shane, Noelle and I went to see "Ponyo" last night at the midnight premier. It was pretty good - the way the film caught the ocean reminded me of an expansion of the heavenly flood scenes in "Spirited Away". Naturally my favorite part were the great Devonian lungfishes and trilobites that swim and scuttle about in the background from start to finish.
As for the plot, I felt it was sort of light and squishy and not quite defined. If you don't like it when Miyazaki gets way surreal, you may not like this one very much. I want to say it's a movie that makes sense only to little kids and readers of Jung. It's a take on The Little Mermaid, if you wanted to make an extremely sherbert-colored yet magically feminist rejoinder to the entire concept. (Ponyo's glorious mother is implied to be Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy. And she is.)
It's the sort of movie you can imagine taking a five year old to see and twenty years later, their mind has become indefinably warped. I want to see it again.
Meanwhile, in real life: we got the air conditioner fixed. Yay.
