I was wondering if I'm hypocritical myself.

Maybe I am.

Or maybe I'm looking at it in conjunction with other things that I had a problem with already. Hm.

Thanks for this comment and giving me more to think about in regard to this in particular, and safe spaces in general.

I'm going to quote brightfame at you: Fen of colour are never going to move in lockstep on all issues of words, tone, beliefs, politics etc. No space can ever be truly safe for all my triggers as well as all of yours.

I think she's correct. In some places 'negra' is inflammatory. In others, it's merely descriptive. In some places, nigger is seen as provocation to murder. In others, it's merely descriptive. And this is us talking about us to each other.

This is true.

I think cultural context is one of the problems with the way this was called out by Nick.

I also use similar language from time to time.

I also don't believe that one's behavior in his own personal journal necessarily dictates what his behavior might be in a community.

That it was a white guy calling him out and thereby uncutting a community very specifically not for white folks doesn't sit entirely well with me.

I'm thinking of Junot Diaz and his liberal (and deliberately provocative) use of the word nigger in his Oscar Wao.

It's the informal. I'm really skeeved by neo-prodigy's language in that post, but, I do also see white folks going, "What you're doing here is unworthy given that this dude isn't speaking appropriately."

And yet.

What he said doesn't sit well with me. How this plays out in distracting from celebrating poc doesn't sit well with me.

I flinch when I hear "bitch" from a man. It really hurts.

a community very specifically not for white folks

Huh, that wasn't the impression I got from this:

"a new community entitled FOC_U has been created. It's designed to be a safespace for POCs/non-whites and white allies"

I was thinking of joining, but certainly don't want to barge in if it's meant to be POC-only. Do you know if that's been changed since the linked post was written?

(This is entirely separate from the question of whether Nick's post was appropriate, though since the "fat nelly" comment was apparently directed at Nick, I suspect that was most of his impetus, rather than any attempt to piss on a POC bonfire.)

This is a relevant point. Thank you for making it.
