I just ... she's beautiful, but I hope that she has gotten over her issues with identifying with blackness enough to understand the importance of the shoes she is trying to fill with this role*.

I love how you don't call her stupid or self-hating. I love your love ethic.

Okay, I had a hard time finding that one interview I put up in this post. And I was like, "Why is that? And I was all ready to be like, "So the black woman doesn't get the opportunity to interface with the media?" And then I saw the interview, and I was like, "...Oh, wow. I guess she was so busy with dancing and acting class, her talent goes mostly into performance of what type but not of another..." (Really trying to be benefit-of-the-doubty-here but that is one dull and uninteresting interview. O.o).

I see your point about Saldana not being up to Nichelle Nichols in terms of character. Nichelle has this command air in just about everything I've ever seen her in or do. She speaks with authority and simplicity. Saldana...That interview I linked to was the only Trek-related one I could find.

From what you're telling me, I'm hoping Saldana doesn't say much about Uhura's significance. Saldana would be out of gas without Nichols putting up with so much shit to do the work in the first place! Nichols is a race woman. For me, she is a race woman. She reminds me of teachers I've had who, no matter what they were doing or how they were sleeping, they had in mind and thought the uplift and inherent dignity of our race.

I think, then, that Saldana may mostly be about the uplift of her. I hope she's not one of those blacks who isn't an African-American but doesn't like African-Americans and decides that black=African American.

I was not a fan of hers. I haven't seen anything she's been in other than PotC. I didn't feel her, so, even though I had an index up for her at the dailies, there was her index pic and that was it.

She does not have Nichelle Nichol's charisma. (Like Chris Pine doesn't have Shatner's). I'm hoping that when she did get cast, she wasn't keilexandering it. I was *so* hoping that a grown woman or a race woman who thinks, "I'm a special snow-flake with a life-tan." Salli Richardson or Gabrielle Union or Anika Noni Rose woulda got cast. Or somebody who doesn't count among her blessings, "Not being hung up about race." (Which is the kindest interpretation I can give for a latinegra who's like 'ugh, the black thing'.) That bit in her interview when she talks about her mother's Spanish accent put my teeth on edge, I admit." This, combined with what you just told me, makes me go. :/

Thank you EB. I try not to call it out like that.

You welcome, 'Fae, Your gentleness is humbling.

I get the term 'race woman' from somewhere else... I can't recall where though.

Saldana and uplift... I think how James Roday has been consciously putting it out there that he's Mexican... And why. :)

I always thought Nichols took her work and presence seriously but not herself seriously.
