"I want to write a moody, atmospheric story about two people having really hot sex and I want to it to be tragic, and modern, and about impermeability and the cycle of life. I know! I'll set it at ground zero and reference 9-11.
"Wait, wait, changed my mind! I like my porn sweaty and humid! And I want to set the story in a place where people don't speak much English. I know, I'll make Cambodia and the killing fields the backdrop for the sex! It's an exotic locale and there's soft grass for them to lay on and it smells so much nicer than a blasted American city."
Well, yes, someone took the time to do a little research on Cambodia because they were writing pr0n and wanted to set it somewhere hot and sweaty. And then they went and referenced the Killing Fields because, well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

ETA: "So does fandom get a set of trading stamps every time someone says or does something blindingly privileged and ethnocentric, and then when you fill the whole book you get to fuck the character of your choice? Because that's the only explanation I can come up with for all of this, lately." --
