Resident Evil fans at odds

Aug 02, 2007 20:52

RE 5 has been critiqued because of a scene where a white character, placed in Africa, goes about shooting down zombies (who happen to be black). One blogger complains. The response has been disheartening, but not surprising.

In some of her own words:

I care deeply about the way in which Black people are portrayed in this world; it is the impetus of my political thought and action...

Here are the links to my posts about Resident Evil 5: Link and link.

Never have I been so harassed and insulted, and all because I questioned the imagery in this game. I jokingly wrote to Sokari at blacklooks today (I also blog at blacklooks) that during my year of blogging I have challenged the politics and motivations of everyone from Zionist Jews, Mexican gang members, NYC lesbian Puerto Rican City Council people, national elected figures, and even Black people, but never have I been more attacked than by a community of men who play video games. The response has been horrifying.

I'm not shocked by the racism/sexism of the gamers who responded to my post. Racism and sexism are alive and well. I am shocked that in the same breath some of these folks denied that Resident Evil 5 displayed racist/anti-Black imagery; they called me things like "nigger", "bitch", and "whore".

From her blog.

There's more on this at girl_gamers.

I'll be sending this woman love. Interesting the contrast between the actively racist fans of Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and Star Gate Atlantis and the Resident Evil gamer crew.

Do people who might care, still wonder why I have never yet been to a 'con?
