"It's either this, or I put a bag over your head while you're sleeping."
"Gosh, you're quite the ray of sunshine when you're tired," he huffs testily, and then changes the subject, going back to examining the label. "Are you on any other medication?"
Arthur shakes his head.
"Are you pregnant?"
Arthur sees no need to respond, just closes his eyes against the ridiculous look that he knows is on Eames' face, that playful face that Arthur just isn't in the mood to look at right now.
"Are you planning on driving or operating heavy machinery in the next twelve hours?"
"Eames, no."
Eames clucks his tongue, disappointed and disapproving. "Why not?"
When it's time to sleep, Arthur swallows one of the pills with water, and then lies back and waits for it to take effect. He waits for Eames to start snoring, and his mind summons [all these scary thoughts of Eames snores following him etc etc.] It is clear, before Eames even starts snoring for real, that Arthur is not going to get any sleep.
Pretending to forget that he'd already taken a sleeping pill, Arthur takes two more, and finally passes out a little before six.
The following day sees Arthur caught in a cycle of running to the toilet, emerging some minutes or hours looking increasingly pale and exhausted, vehemently insisting i'm fine, it's finished now, just a bug, and then running back to the toilet. Lather, rinse, repeat, all day long.
After the first hour, Cobb gives up knocking on the bathroom door and asking how he's doing.
Eames brings him water bottles, apples, raisins, muffins, and then a whole bag of popcorn. When Arthur finally makes it back to his hotel room, he finds that all of Eames' things are gone, that Eames must have checked into another room.
He showers, then crawls into bed. It is empty and cold, and Arthur still doesn't get more than two hours of sleep that night.
--
In Panama, Arthur returns to the hotel room that he has purchased for himself and Eames in an act of surprising optimism. Or a sign of brain deterioration, which Eames makes a note to look into (because he really does feel guilty, still, about Arthur overdosing on sleeping pills because of him).
Arthur sits up all night with a tape recorder, recording Eames' snoring.

(and you know what, I kindof want to finish this now. DAMN YOU and your distracting me. Even if it is a good distraction. Thanks, hon.)
