Last night I tried playing poker for the first time.  It was just a friendly game at our local, where everyone paid £2.50 at the start for their chips.  I'm not totally clued up on the rules yet, and will brush up on them before I play again.  Anyway, people were willing to explain things as we went along, which was good.

Not so good:  several people were answering their phones and texting during the game, which was pretty annoying.  Also, the table was too high so you had to stand up to see the cards properly (I mean the communal cards in the middle, which were referred to as "the river").

I didn't have a single good hand all evening.  But it was an interesting new experience, and possibly worth pursuing (though only in this very small-scale way, I think!)  May also try playing one of the free sites on-line.

I still haven't shaken off my cold.  Woke up again with a sore throat this morning.  Annoying - I thought I'd be over it by now.  Just hope it's gone by next Thursday, which is when I will be travelling by train to my dad's with my nephews in tow.

The braille music system is going well.  I've worked out an intermediate way of writing it by hand, prior to brailling.  So I can work a piece out like that first and make sure it is right before actually brailling it - a good thing, as I don't have much braille paper at the moment.    Also, I will be able to go on doing some when I'm at my dad's, as I won't be able to carry the brailler as well as everything else.

Going to try and travel reasonably light.  Wondering whether I should not take my mandolin - though I would like to have it there.  I haven't been practising for ages and it would be a good opportunity to start again.  But if I do take it, I will be carrying this:

- Big back-pack containing clothes
- Bag containing books, piano music, mandolin music, nutritional supplements and other bits and bobs
- Carrier bag containing my dad's easter egg and a jigsaw puzzle for him from my partner
- Bag containing my tapestry, plus wool
- Mandolin
- Small backpack containing all my handbag type stuff

So I'd have the big pack on my back, the book bag over one shoulder, small back-pack over the other shoulder, tapestry bag and easter egg bag in one hand and mandolin in the other.

Feasible?
