So we went to Tangled yesterday evening. I even made a few notes :O
- It was like a fairytale! It really felt like a fairytale, I guess is what I mean. Probably because of the setting, the set-up, and the colour pallet.
- Which is my next point. The colouring and lighting on this film was AMAZING. The colours were bright and idealised but that added to the fairytale sense and besides, they completely drained the colours when they needed too. Otherwise it was incredibly vibrant and lush and I loved it.
- I loved all the music. Seriously. When I went to Princess and the Frog last year I liked the music, but it took some warming up to for me (though I love it now, haha). But Tangled? Yeah, I pretty much adored every song right off the bat. "Mother Knows Best" reminded me of Barbara Streisand so damn much and I loved it. I loved the pacing in that sequence btw. "I've Got a Dream" nearly fucking killed me I was laughing so hard. Tears POURING down my cheeks. It's like Alan Menken said "Fuck it, let's get Eric Idle to write this song." I was having serious flashbacks to "Knights of the Round Table". And of course "When Will My Life Begin?" and "I See the Light" were totally adorable.
- I thought the music was integrated differently to how we're used to in Disney musicals; I found it reminded me much more of stage shows than other Disney films. I am not complaining about that btw, I thought it worked really well and was a refreshing change. I guess I just felt like the songs were stitched into the story a bit more because of the reprises and the way the songs kinda faded out. IDK, I liked it, though.
- Also, I thought the humour in this film was really out there and I totally adored it. As I touched on above, I thought it was very Monty Python-esque and damn, I was laughing so hard at some points.
- "I have magic hair that glows when I sing." "...WHAT?" "...I HAVE MAGIC HAIR THAT GLOWS WHEN I SING!"
- THEY SHOWED A NOOSE ON A DISNEY FILM THAT ISN'T PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. AND THEN THEY SAID HE WAS GOING TO BE HANGED. AND. AND. THEN MOTHER GOTHEL STABBED FLYNN EUGENE FLYNN. AND THEN THEY SHOWED THE BLOOD. AND THEN HE LEGIT DIED. That was an intense denouement, just sayin'.
- Side note, when Flynn climbed up the tower after escaping his execution, I jokingly whispered to Boyfriend "Hasn't he read the story? Doesn't he know this is the bit where the prince climbs up the tower and the witch stabs him to death?" Needless to say, I felt pretty shitty when THEY ACTUALLY STUCK TO THAT PART OF THE STORY.
- I was REALLY FASCINATED by the psychology behind the relationship between Rapunzel and Gothel. Obviously, the audience knows that Gothel has only looked after Rapunzel for 18 years because of her magic hair that glows when she sings, but then there are these moments when I actually thought "Wait... Does she care about Rapunzel, or not?" Like the "I love you/Love you more/Love you most" bit. I mean, it seems genuine, but then on the last bit Gothel is clearly talking to the top of Rapunzel's head and kisses hair. With a normal mother/daughter relationship, that would be genuinely affectionate. But it's twisted slightly. I can see why Rapunzel believed Gothel was her mother and trying to look after her for all those years.
- I loved that there was a focus on a mother/daughter relationship for once. Also, I thought it was a neat tie-in that Rapunzel's mother was the one who stepped forwards (they looked really alike xD).
- I still think Rapunzel would have been a better name, considering Flynn out and out says that it's her story in the first two minutes, AND THEN IT ACTUALLY IS. So yeah, I can see why they changed the name, but I don't agree with it. I'm still not reconciled to the boy-focused trailers either, as it reinforces the idea that boys can't relate to a female protagonist. I know it worked and a lot of boys went to the movie that normally wouldn't have, but I still think it sucks.
- Cried a total of three times, I think. Once because "I Have a Dream" was so damn funny, when the King cried and they released the lanterns for her birthday, and then when Flynn was DYING and Rapunzel was saying her song over and over and trying to bring him back and I just baw'd.
- So... I'm definitely buying the artbook.
- GUYS, RAPUNZEL IS MANDY MOORE. I mean, I know Mandy Moore is her VA, but she LOOKS like Mandy Moore at points. AND THEN SHE CUTS HER HAIR AND IT'S SHORT AND BROWN AND YEAH, THAT'S MANDY MOORE. I don't have a problem with it, but WOW :D
- Rapunzel was cute as a button and I love her.
Also, Disney, please hurry up and tell us what you've got planned for next summer onwards.
