Within reach

I sat down with the boy last night and worked out my budget, and he helped me work it out so that I can finally do something I've wanted to do for several years: get a fursuit. I've dreamt of commissioning one for a very long time, but it seemed like a silly way to blow a couple grand on something I'd never wear in public. But now that we're planning on attending some furcons I'm going to make the leap. Enthusiasm is infectious, it seems, so it looks like we're going to commission two suits :)

After years of looking at photos and videos online of folks having a blast performing in suit, I can finally do it myself (or will, by next summer).

To prepare, I'm working on the finer details of my character, and I need to create the boy's as well. I have some ideas for his and have been going back to some favorite, more masculine fursuits for inspiration. After I've worked out the details I'll be commissioning some character reference sheets. I can't delay, as the maker I'd really like to commission could open slots any day and they won't last long. Luckily there is a growing pool of fursuit makers out there who make really fine suits, so there are good options.

Being crafty like I am, however, all this fursuit-think makes me itch to make my own. That would be cheaper and more rewarding, but there is definitely an aspect of I want a really amazing suit in my hands. I think I'll simply have my cake and eat it too by commissioning one AND making one--at some point. We're going to Burning Man in 2010, and that will definitely provide some costuming motivation, whether or not I make a full suit anytime soon. The tail I made for BM 2007 was a huge success, so there WILL be fursuiting (sort of) at Burning Man next year. I envision ridiculous tails and paws, arms, claws, wings...who knows?
