On finding opportunities

I recently ran across the most fabulous opportunity. Its not like I don't already have a job. Its not like its not a good job. In fact, its been a well paying and engaging job where I can work from home. But I regularly get calls from recruiters because I am an experienced engineer and I don't hide my resume.

Provided I'm actually qualified, I up front with "This is the situation I am in, can you make my situation better?" Usually, they just laugh and go on their way - because my situation has been so awesome that they can't offer anything better. I honestly never expected to find anything better, the situation I'm in is pretty much the best I've ever had.

But this time, they said "yes". After a single in-person interview they offered me an 80% raise over my current job. So I'll be going to Cincinnati to start this job on the Sixth of October. But how, I wonder, did I get this opportunity?

I think it comes down to never saying 'no, leave me alone' when I get calls from recruiters. I usually represent my status as "open for fabulous opportunities". And it took time, a long time. But when this fabulous opportunity came along, I didn't dismiss it out of hand, without learning if it was obviously better than what I have. I even took the time to fully investigate it on

What do you do when things that might be opportunities intersect your life? Do you turn your shoulder and cling to what you have, paying no attention to what is out there?

Or do you greet it with a friendly face, learn about it and see if there might be something notable in it?
