Can anyone tell me about the Girl Scouts of America?

Yes, I've been to the site; that's not what I'm interested in. The girls came home with information and of course, they want to join. I have a vague recollection that they are not affiliated with or anything like their male equivalent, which I am hoping is true because I've recently had to ( Read more... )

I was a girl scout on and off. I don't recall any correlation between girl scouts and religion, other than when I was about 12 or 13 our meetings were held in a Methodist church, in one of the bible group rooms, but there wasn't anything on the walls or any talk of religion ever really. Growing up, we were always encouraged to make up our own mind about religion so it really wasn't something my sister and I thought about or focused on, really.

What I do remember are the friends I made. We took a lot of great trips - one I remember specifically was to Savannah GA to see the Juliette Gordon Lowe house. We went down River Street, saw where they filmed Forrest Gump, had a dress up tea party (that was the funnest, believe it or not) all victorian style. Oo, I remember now that we DID go to a very beautiful catholic church that sunday morning, but I think it was because my leader and her daughter were catholic and some of the parents might have asked for it. It was a historic landmark too, though.

I think in Girl Scouts, you learn how to interact with different people, how to work as a team, how to manage and lead. It has great potential for giving self confidence. You make things with your hands, learn skills like cooking (and not susie homemaker kind... like, how to make spaghetti for 45 people or something), make fires, horseback riding, soaps... all sorts of stuff. Plus, there's summer camp!

So, I personally advocate it and I think your girls will get a lot out of it. I also think you'd enjoy it as well. You'll be volunteering for stuff in no time. We went to a nursing home and had a sock hop one year... we went carolling and brought presents to a facility for mentally and physically incapable people and we volunteered for the special olympics (my leader was a special ed teacher).

They can get summer jobs through girl scouts, get scholarships for college, all sorts of stuff. And if worse comes to worse and they hate it, they don't have to go back. You don't have to go to every meeting, every trip... you know..
