snafu/liebs first (1/2);skyliliesDecember 11 2011, 07:17:05 UTC
snafu has a habit of curling into joe's back in the middle of the night, where only his head and knees end up making contact. they're perfectly comfortable with invading each other's space in every day situations, but the longer they're together the more carefully kept the space between them as they sleep seems to become.
besides smoking? their favorite activity is lmao for a second i was like, wait, it does specify nonsexual, right? 'cause THAT'S SORT OF A FAVORITE ACTIVITY OF THEIRS listening to the radio -- sports when they can catch them (joe yells a lot during these) and game shows (...during these too) at night are their usual fare. (joe also likes it whenever his customer's kids come into the barber shop to get their hair cut -- he always has fun around them.)
joe loves going to diners for giant burgers and fries -- good old american food, and one day they found a little mom and pop candy shop behind the tobacco store, and occasionally snafu ends up with gumballs growing sticky in his pockets as he rations them over the week.
they fight over postage stamps and where to keep loose change. snafu never remembers how much postage is needed and always puts on more than one stamp, and joe thinks it's a stupid waste of money and doesn't understand what can be so damn hard when it has the 3-cent price written right onto the stamp itself. joe's superstitious about keeping all their change in one place, it seems to him like they're just inviting trouble, but he starts complaining only half-heartedly when he sees snafu run a finger around the rim of the money jar and get that almost hopeful look on his face.
joe does most of the cleaning. maybe it's his barber coming through, but he always sweeps the floors. and every once in a while he forces them to do a thorough cleaning, bitching the whole time about how his grandma used to make him do this as a kid. snafu's pretty good with the handiwork, and that time when their pipes broke he fixed them, and he patched together the old table and the broken floorboard with nails and wood he lifted from one of his jobs. (but when they broke their only radio they sat staring at it morosely for a few evenings in a sort of disbelieving shock.)
joe is really the one who goes to the theaters, but when him and snafu both go it's usually because joe has heard about some new or re-run movie showing with a particularly chesty broad that he'd like to see. he spends his extra cash on it, and then makes enthusiastically obscene gestures and comments about the lead actress for a while after. (but they also saw a cheap re-run showing of bambi once and they may possibly have cried.)
joe only notices the cold when snafu's gotten up and left town without notice again -- it doesn't get all that cold in san fransisco, but whenever there's a bite in the air in the winter months, he purposely refuses to put on the heavier clothes that most of the other californians do at the first sign of even a slight chill, and he still stays barefoot and half out of the blankets at night. it isn't anything to complain about. (he does his best not to think about much, much colder nights.)
joe and snafu are both restless sleepers, so instead of blankets really being stolen they end up kicked off or at the foot of the bed by the morning. sometimes if one of them gets too restless, he resettles onto the floor and sleeps there, instead, and inevitably by the morning they're both sleeping on the floor without blankets or, most of the time, pillows.

snafu drops his stuff everywhere and every which way -- boots by the door, dirty clothes in every room, clutter growing steadily but surely on the table and bookshelf they hardly ever use. but if joe ever leaves his shoes out or things on the floor, snafu'll kick them out of his way, and no matter how much joe bitches about it he doesn't stop, so joe usually tries to keep his stuff out of harms' way if it has any value to him. otherwise, it goes into one of the clutter piles or the floor with the knowledge that snafu'll rifle through and take anything he wants.
the milk bottles get left on their doorstep, and they use money from the change jar to pay for it, so who ever's there to put out money or answer the door pays. (the milkman prefers joe, he finds snafu a bit unsettling.)
neither of them really remember anniversaries, but they both remember places -- one time, after a particularly bad fight, snafu disappeared and joe found him outside the diner where they first met, smoking cigarettes and looking for all the world like a feral dog. they both have trinkets and places that make something inside them soften because of the memories connected, but they almost purposely avoid placing a date to any event -- everything in their lives feel unpredictable, they don't want dates caging them in.

I have to dash off to work, so superquick response right now: I ADORE how you write these two complex and frankly, fucked-up, men and how you write them togther and make everything fit and seem perfect, along with the layers hinting to the darker aspects and the more of all of it.
And this: (the milkman prefers joe, he finds snafu a bit unsettling.)

I DO NOT KNOW. It's back now, for a bit. I do plan on calling someone at Time Warner tomorrow and being, "Dude, yo, wtf?"
I was distracted by holiday programming, but now back to the prompt writing. I sat down to write Harry/Kitty for Skew and started writing Ack-Ack/Hillbilly in Nashville 'verse instead. Whoops.

I really don't know what's up. I'm hoping it stays up until I go to work so I can get things posted.
IT's HILLBILLY AND HALDANE AND NASHVILLE AND THEIR DOG. Like, seriously? This meme? MADE for them. I'm doing one more of the original requests and then I'm going to back and do differents shaded of Runner/Chuckler for Nat and Babe/Roe for you, and Harry/Kitty for Skew.
