Never has an icon been so appropriate.
I got a review today for a ficlet that I did awhile ago, and it just made me laugh. Not in a mocking fashion, but because they were exactly right on the mark in one specific point. So I'm going to ramble 'bout why it made me laugh. And beam.
Keep in mind, la, that most of this is personal speculation and may or may not be borne out my canon.

Eh? C&C? Well, whatever..that was somewhat scary, but really excellent!...You like to mess with Naruto via Kyuubi, don't you? Also, how do we really know what gender the Kyuubi is? It could be a vixen..

I can't help but laughing at the point you like to mess with Naruto via Kyuubi, because the truth is? YES, YES I DO. Why? Because, really, *points to icon* he's got a crazy-powerful demon fox stuck in him who still has an awareness of the outside world, has been shown to be able to directly communicate with Naruto, not to mention that when Naruto goes past a certain point in borrowing Kyuubi's power he loses his mind and acts on Kyuubi's destructive urges with little to know discrimination about who he's attacking.
Most people write Naruto without contemplating/exploring the effects of this other than YAY SUPER STRENGTH AND HEALING. I, uh, spend all my time wondering just how much all that drawing on the Kyuubi's power degrades the seals holding him in. No, really. Build a dam, the water can and will erode it over time. Build a bridge, and eventually the bridge will collapse. Build a wall, a house, a tower, and eventually the supports become unstable and the whole thing comes crashing down.
Naruto has had Kyuubi in his body for nearly sixteen years. Of that, the last four years he's spent heavily using the foreign chakra.
Yeah. That sort of thing? Should be causing wear and tear, and the Kyuubi would only be able to approve of it. And, yes, Jiraiya knows seals. But he's not the one that created the seal. That was the Yondaime. And Jiraiya's dead now, anyway so that point is moot. The only person who could really know if something was up with the seal? Is a man who died the day Naruto was born. If Naruto dies while Kyuubi's stuck in him? Then Kyuubi dies. But, if the seal degrades enough that the Kyuubi is the one to kill Naruto. Then I don't think that Kyuubi would die. I don't even think that Naruto's body would die, not technically.
Kyuubi is still tied to the body, after all. But Naruto himself? Personality and soul? I do think that Kyuubi could kill that if the seal was weakened enough and he'd do it gladly. It's been well shown that he's not fond of the boy who is, after all, his jailer. Yes, he's saved Naruto's life before, but that's because he'd die too.
So, yes, if I like messing with Naruto's seal and degrading it and playing with what would happen if that happened? Well, there's thought behind it. Both Kyuubi Laughed and Pass the Dream Along touch on this, and there's a longer story in the works that goes through it in depth. It's not something, though, I think I'll ever get tired of poking at. There's so many routes and paths and twists that could take.
