Rosalind does everything. She cooks, cleans, makes their house a home, makes sure her dad eats and is on time, and does her best to raise Elena all by herself after their mom dies.
But she's only a kid herself and when the Turks come knocking (because Rosalind has overachieved in every aspect of her life and they've noticed; they want her more than their dad does and more than Elena seems to) she says yes.
Yes, because finally someone will tell her what to do. Yes, because they'll give her a home, rather than her making one for others.

Elena is so angry at Rosalind for leaving. Elena doesn't remember their mom (Rosalind is her mom, though she never says that; that's weird) and maybe-okay-yes she takes Rosalind for granted right up until she's gone.
Then the weight of their father's expectations falls on her and, unlike Rosalind (she's nothing like Rosalind!) Elena doesn't thrive. Instead, she lashes out. She disobeys. When Rosalind deigns to visit, Elena is terrible and bratty. (Rosalind visits less and less.)
When the Turks come for her, Elena says yes.
(And, again, it's Rosalind's home she's come to.)
When no one's watching, Elena cries.

He drinks too much, too often and knows it. Drinking doesn't drown out the emptiness of the house (not a home) is with both of his girls gone. He keeps the house, though he loses his job, because Rosalind pays for it. (Elena sends no money home.)
When the plate falls, he watches from the window of the room his girls once shared and toasts to it.
It doesn't matter whether it kills him, but if it does… well, he'd love to see his wife again.
Both his girls are stronger than he is. He's so proud.
(He never tells.)
