She was not going to scream. No. Really. She was not going to scream. Not at the sight of all the blood-oh god, all that blood-or the sight of the bodies in so many pieces that she couldn’t even tell how many bodies there were. Blood scent killed any other smell and filled her head with itself oppressively.
Blood was everywhere. Parts of people were everywhere.
Why had she wanted to scout again?
There was a hand gripping a coffee cup. Just the hand. Where the arm was, she didn’t know. Ino swallowed hard on the rising urge to vomit and picked her way forward. A leg. There. In pale panty hose with the foot wearing a stylish red heel.
Not going to scream.
Had to remain cool. Had to remain detached. She was a ninja dammit and that meant she couldn’t react like a civilian.
(Even if she wanted to.)
Detachment was hard to come by when there was a head staring with awful blankness in the wide-open eyes. Where was the rest of the body? Was it one of the ones in pieces around? Did she want to know?
No.
Did she have to figure it out? Yes.
Ino swallowed hard and gingerly continued her search. Struggling not to retch as she mentally cataloged all of the pieces she found and slowly, ever so slowly began to guess how many people had been here.
(Until they’d been violently separated from themselves and rendered into more bits and parts than she’d ever seen.)
Blood oozed from the ceiling and she stared apprehensively at it. She’d have to find out what was causing it.
She didn’t want to.
Only the thought of the response she’d get-what sort of a ninja was afraid of a little carnage?-had her going up the stairs. The only good thing was that she couldn’t sense anyone alive other than her here.
At least this was over-for the bodies. For her and her team, the work was just beginning.
