"This one is really quite enjoyable. It’s got a lovely command of language (almost poetic in style and is immediately gripping). The world is built around the narrative quite naturally without needing large sequences of explanation or exposition, it's all just interwoven. The same goes for the characterisation, they develop, grow, and deepen naturally as the plot progresses, and their respective journeys all feel natural and deliberate. No character ends up feeling like a tag along with nothing to provide to the wider text. Thematically the story is great. It opens deep questions about the future of Earth and humanity, with a unique outlook on Earth’s future that blends quasi-apocalyptic elements within it. And yet, the concepts first founded on Earth are still so central to their lives. This strange juxtaposition is threaded throughout the story and makes for a rather wonderful melancholy. These concepts are immediately established really succinctly and naturally with the opening funeral. The tone of brutal realism introduces the fundamental human element to the story, it stresses from the beginning that (despite its unimaginably distant futuristic setting) it’s primarily a story about people and their visceral human experiences - a shared experience that regardless of where or when we are, we will always have to endure and battle with. Long story short, it’s very good!"
