new city, new job, new hair

New York, where do I begin? I've been here for three weeks, and I've had the chance to meet up with a few old faces. Hi, Phillip!

My first week was orientation, and it was great. I got put up in a huge corner suite with the best bed ever, king size with ten pillows. All of the orientation events made me very optimistic about my career and future in the industry. The nights that we went out and people that I met made me happy about my move to the big city. I've got a few pictures from my first week on Facebook.

I really think New York is the place for me to be at this point in my life. I'm really happy with the my first rotation. The agency I'm at is good place for me to start, and my supervisor is great. You can tell he's a good father because he really knows how to lay things out without taking away the opportunity to learn. And when it comes to music, man, this is the place to be. I saw Grand National do an acoustic set for free at a bar in the Lower East Side after my first day of work, and last weekend, I saw Malajube, Sam Roberts, and The Stills at Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

So fun story, on my first day of work, I went out to grab a quick lunch by myself, and a man approached me, holding a huge stack of papers. Because of all the noise pollution, I could barely hear him, and I thought he wanted to sell me something or have me sign a petition. But then I caught, "I'm sorry, but I had to. You're just so pretty," and before we parted ways, he handed me his business card and asked me to call him for lunch or dinner. Haha. It would be flattering except that I think it's just because men in New York are definitely more forward. I've only received one business card, but I've received a hand full of comments and one liners. In California, that rarely happens, but here, just about every other day I can count on someone to say something.

I haven't had too much trouble adjusting to the pace of New York. I thank senior year of high school and my last two years of college. Those years really shaped me into the person that I am, got my cultured, and taught me to work under pressure. And c'mon, I lived in Orange County and interned and went out in LA. I'm not a small town girl. The main adjustment is the lack of privacy and personal space with public transportation and the constant smell of urine and garbage. The weather blows too, but whatever, I've come to accept that nothing will ever be as nice as southern California.

I love food! In fact, I am lucky that I am not heftier, but I have been experiencing some appetite loss. I've been forcing myself to eat so my stomach doesn't hurt and because I know I have to. Nothing sounds good, and nothing really tastes good either. Last night, I went to Chipotle and ate more than I've eaten all week. It was so good and so filling that I fell asleep on the subway ride back and missed my stop. Yeah... Haha.

Wednesday was 4th of July, and I went to a little shindig at Jerry's apartment in Long Island City. We watched the East River fireworks from his room. He has a pretty sweet view. At his shindig, I met his friend Jean, who knows some people who just opened up a bar, and the DJs they have right now are playing straight off their iPods. One of my life ambitions is to DJ in a big city. Do you see where I am going with this?

Right now, I am staying way uptown at Tran's apartment near 168th in Washington Heights. She's at Columbia Dental School for a couple more years, which works perfectly with the timing of my program. In less than a week, I will be in my new apartment in Long Island City. I can't wait! I've been looking up decorations like whoa.

And last thing, I cut my hair. I did a little sketching on a yellow post-it, and wham bam! I was afraid to look in the mirror right after I got it cut, but over the last couple of days, I've decided that I like it.

That's it for now. Chromeo, Flosstradamus, and Kid Sister tonight at Studio B. It's going to be ridiculous.
