Just something I was musing about tonight... I decided to put it into words.

It’s one of those nights you shy away from the spotlight you so usually find trailing your every step. Right now, you are most yourself, most free to do whatever you wanted or say whatever you felt like saying. You are most happy like this, lying on her lap with your eyes closed, just listening to her voice as she talks to you about random things you both share.
And then she says something that makes your heart beat faster than usual. You open your eyes and gaze into hers, already cloudy with tears. Quickly, you take her in your arms, holding her as if your life depended on it, and her body shakes as she cries against your chest.
Just the day before, you heard them applauding your greatness, the excellence of your work. You heard them cheer about how strong you are, how much a man you have grown since you’ve begun flying through the bluest of skies. You shone amongst all of them, and you humbly bowed, thanking them for their kind words. You’ve done well. Another day has passed.
But now she, the love of your life, is breaking in your arms, and you find yourself hurting as if she were glass shattering, her tears tearing at your flesh and burning your wounds. You wish you were in a familiar scene, where you know exactly what to say and do to make her feel even just a little bit better. But you’re not. These - the life you have with her, and the tears that fall from her eyes - are real, and right now, nothing you can say will be able to ease her pain.
You choke on the words as you admit it: Everything had been your fault. You have been so used to this, so accustomed to the fact that your world is perfect and happy, that you’ve overlooked one single detail that is her happiness. The applause is fading, and so are the cheers. You are neither great nor excellent now. Just when you thought everything you’ve done has made you stronger, her tears fall and weaken every single part of you.
You find yourself crying with her as you wipe the tears off her face. The damage has been done, and it seems to be something beyond repair. She lets go of you and smiles at you to stop herself from crying. It breaks your heart even more.
The sun is painting the horizon beautifully, chasing the night away. You watch her as she sleeps, still wondering how to mend what you have unconsciously broken. You close your eyes and wrap your arms around her, offering solace, hoping you’d find a way to win back her smile and her broken heart when she wakes.
