Character Index, Midterm, books

Well... I began the process of creating a character index for my novel. I'm going to have to make some sort of cross-referencing thing though because plain lists aren't going to work. But they are better than nothing. At least I finally have everybody's names in one place.

As for the midterm, I submitted everything that needed to be submitted before the midterm, but I still need to read a chapter and at least sketch out answers to the short answer questions on the study guide before I can take the test. I have until 8pm tomorrow to study... then I have to start the test.

Of course I've got to get 8 hours of work in there too... I'm thinking I might be a bit more worried about this test than I was before...

I ordered Sabriel by Garth Nix from Barnes and Noble today on the recommendation of a friend. I've heard good things, and the excerpt I read at the website was certainly interesting.

I got an email today basically saying I should boycott the movie The Golden Compass because the author is an atheist an the book is promoting the idea of killing God and him being a doddering old fool or some thing like that. The article he linked to basically said that the anti-religious elements had been largely removed from the movie, thus lulling parents into a false sense of security so they buy the book for their children, and promoting this atheist point of view. It also goes on to say that the author hates CS Lewis and the Chronicles of Narnia and wrote this series as a foil for it.

I not only read The Golden Compass, and its sequels, but thoroughly enjoyed them. Are they anti-Catholic... perhaps. 'The Church' in the books is a rather malevolent entity to be sure. Is the 'God' figure a doddering old fool... yes and no. I mean he is, but it's also stated in the Amber Spyglass that the one they thought was the Creator was actually just the first Angel... and it's the Angel that 'dies' not God.

Anyway, I don't believe the book is anti-Christian so much as anti-Catholic. I thought the books were excellent, and though not as richly steeped in Christian theology as Narnia, they come close. Is the author an atheist... yes. He's admitted it. He's even said that he hates the Catholic church and organized religion in general. But he did a hell of a lot of research in his writing.

Of course, I'm a firm believer in reading fantasy for fantasy's sake. These books did not change my faith in any way. Nor do I think they would make any sort of impact on the faith of others. As long as parents have taught their children the difference between fantasy and faith... this shouldn't be an issue at all.

It's like all the Christian Coalitions against Harry Potter. HELLO?! ITS PRETEND. IT'S A STORY FOR FUN!!! NOT A RELIGION. But discussing anything related to religion with the particular person who sent me this e-mail never goes anywhere. We have completely different ideas on faith.
