Books & TV & Spam

I'm completely snacky today. It's not even 9:30 in the morning and I've had a bowl of cereal and two granola bars. Which is about three times as much as I normally have by this time of the day. I think I need to drink some more water. STAT.

Over the weekend I started reading "Survival In Auschwitz." You know, for a bit of light reading while getting my hair done. o_0 The material of the book makes it hard to read, but the way that Levi presents it is painfully beautiful. He has an amazing way with words, and while I cringe at a lot of passages, especially when it hits home that this was all REAL, the way he paints the picture of what happened keeps me turning the pages. It's in my bag now, so that hopefully I can read some more on the train home from class tonight.

Finally got caught up with SPN (4x09 and 4x10). Damn! This show? Its hitting all the right buttons, and striking all the right cords, while walking a very, very, VERY tight line. Seriously, it's flirting with material that could possibly tilt the whole thing into stock-standard religious dogma (which would send me running for the hills), but instead, the way that Kripke is twisting it all together works, without being preachy. *loves to Kripke*

Few thoughts, Dean & Sam and Ruby & Anna. How much do I adore them for going there, huh? I've always thought it was a good move on their part to have Sam be the one to possibly be the anti-Christ, because he started out just so hopeful and puppy like. And I thin I've already expressed my adoration for them having Dean be all Angel-touched now. So, to have them confirm Sam and Ruby's activities during Dean's hell-time spell was awesome. To have Dean and ANNA end up in the back of the Impala? Doubly awesome. Even the way the two scenes were shot says a lot about the characters and their motivations (although, really, Kripke? The Titanic window shot? Did you HAVE to go there, you cheeseball you? *snort*)

And yo! Dean DEFENDED RUBY! THAT I did not see coming. Good for you Dean, glad to know that you still trust Sam enough to take his word on her.

The Demon/Angel smack down? So freaking good. I honestly did buy that Dean had given up Anna to the Angels. And while I think that the boys MIGHT be pretty good actors, I actually think that all that emotion we see from Dean in that scene was a result of Anna forcing him to confront what he did in hell. Which is why her "I forgive you" effected him so much I Think. *hugs the Dean*

Speaking of which. YES! Finally! *bounces and twirls and squees* Thank you thank you THANK YOU KRIPKE for not wasting the potential of Dean's time in hell! Gah! I love it! The fact that Dean held out FOR THIRTY YEARS is damn impressive (Sam nailed that one on the head). The fact that he tortured souls for ten years? Guh!! Something that so needed to be done, and something I didn't think they would do (I'm flashing back to a short story by Neil Gaiman right now). But I think, I think what the most interesting aspect of it must be, is something that they didn't really touch on. Something that they didn't really say but which I feel was implied. Namely, that at some point, Dean must have not just gotten use to it, but even found himself reveling in it to some extent (I can't use the word joy, as I think that would be a foreign concept in hell). Alastair said that he had potential. I hardly think that if Dean were fighting what he was doing, Alastair would have felt that way. Instead he would have called him out as a "wuss" or something similar. No, I think that part of what is tearing Dean up about his feelings so much right now, is that he remembers the sensation of torturing someone, and having LIKED IT. Ten years as a willing employee of hell, following unspeakable horrors for three decades? That is something that messes with someone's head. Let alone the fact that he NEVER thought he'd get out of there.

Damn, I don't envy what is going on in Dean's head right now. Not one little bit.

Oh, and one other thing? The fact that Sam's first instinct in ref to the Angels being a threat is to find something to kill them with? Just enhances my theory that Sam is going to fancy himself a nice little alternative to both the rule of Heaven AND Hell on Earth. This show is going crazy places folks. And I loves it.

Lastly, it isn't actually possible to get your friends to stop sending annoying "If you love God and want more money send this email to 30 people in the next 6 seconds!" emails is it? Why isn't there a script I can write for my email along the lines of:

if ($email_glitters and ($requests_forward==true)
and defined $.religious) {
$email = $spam; It drives me mad, I tell you! Mad!
