Nick knew. He knew the moment that Kevin walked in the door that things had changed, probably for the worst and even more so, irrevocably.
"Kevin?" He had to ask, had to know, and in the quiet way he spoke Kevin's name his heart was laid bare. He had no pride because the time for pride was long past.
"Nick, don't." Kevin rubbed a weary hand over his eyes and looked away. Nick was hurting, and once again he was the sole cause. It was always that way it seemed, and Nick deserved more. More than Kevin could ever promise.
