yeah, it's always better when we're together.

hey everyone. sorry that i have vanished from the world of lj for a while. if you know me well enough, you know i've been caught up in the same-old, same-old with work and school. if you don't, then i should talk to you more! ha.

in all honesty, i wanted to update to include a letter i received. the letter is written on behalf of an issue i feel strongly about and i wanted others to read it and at least think about it. even if you do not agree with me and the opinions of this letter, i encourage you to read it anyway.

"On Thursday, January 26th, Senator John Kerry announced that he supports a filibuster of
Judge Samuel Alito and called on his fellow senators to join him in opposing President
Bush's radical, right-wing Supreme Court nominee. I am proud to stand firmly behind
Senator Kerry on this issue, and I strongly urge other members of the U.S. Senate to come
forward as leaders in the movement against Samuel Alito's confirmation.

I understand that George W. Bush has every right to nominate a conservative to the
Supreme Court; however, under the U.S. Constitution, the power to confirm or deny the
president's choice is vested in the Senate. Samuel Alito is simply too radical to be
confirmed to the Supreme Court, and Democratic senators must exercise their
constitutionally-protected right to filibuster his nomination.

Samuel Alito was nominated to replace Sandra Day O'Connor--a groundbreaking moderate
whose vote has recently been instrumental in protecting the Court from succumbing to the
radical right. By replacing Justice O'Connor, Alito would drastically shift the balance
of the Court, thus severely endangering many of the fundamental freedoms that we enjoy as
Americans.

Samuel Alito is not in touch with mainstream American values. He has said that he does
not believe in a constitutional right to privacy. In 1985, he wrote a memo stating that
Roe v. Wade should be overturned, and when given the opportunity to recant on this
sentiment during his testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he refused.
With Justice O'Connor no longer on the Court, Samuel Alito would be the fifth and
deciding vote in overturning Roe v. Wade.

Moreover, as Senator Kerry has said, Samuel Alito's judicial record has been marked by a
history of submitting to excessive government power regardless of how extreme or
egregious the government's actions. Once on the Supreme Court, Alito would serve as
little more than a "yes" man for the Bush administration's dangerous policies.

Samuel Alito's approach to justice poses a grave threat to our most basic American civil
liberties. He has supported the theory of a "unitary executive," which advocates giving
the president extra-constitutional powers, and under an administration that has carried
out illegal domestic spying programs on U.S. citizens, we must be especially cautious of
the overreaching authority of the executive branch.

While all of us certainly remember the terror attacks of September 11th and the way they
have altered how we think about the world, our country, and each other, the most glorious
victory we can achieve in the aftermath of the attacks will be fought here at home
against those radical right-wing zealots who seek to usurp our fundamental rights as
citizens in the name of false security. Now more than ever, it is vitally important for
the maintenance of our free republic that we have a Supreme Court that will fulfill its
duty as the ultimate guardian of our sacred democratic rights. For have we truly defeated
terrorism if in fighting against it we sacrifice the very freedoms that we were attacked
for possessing?

Now is the time for Democrats to stand together and show our fellow citizens that we
value America and freedom too much to sit back and let Samuel Alito sit on the Supreme
Court. As Democrats, it is our turn to lead."

please consider what this means. i have to guess that some people don't even know about this issue and it isn't something that should be ignored. as a pro-choice advocate, i am especially concerned about the possible overturnment of roe v. wade. for all of you girls out there: this is especially crucial. we have never lived in this country when we didn't have the right to chose. are you going to let someone take that away from you?

thanks,
and love always,
