A/N: The anticipated chapter (for Lily). The… ‘Walker Twins’ sounded DAMN wrong. And I made changes to the song

Meanwhile, there was two children who followed the path of red
Had a tea party under the rose tree
An invitation from the castle for them was
The card of Hearts
The fourth Alice were child twins
From curiosity, wandered into the Wonderland
Passing through various doors
And they arrived not too long ago
Stubborn big brother and wise little brother
Although they were closest to Alice
The two never woke up from the dream
And continued roaming the Wonderland

Dressed in a similar fashion as his older brother, Allen stepped out of the house, soaking up the feel of the morning air through his shirt. His white hair was combed in a way that it exposed the birthmark on the left side of his face. It was shaped like a scar the top starting with an upside down star and winding downwards through his cheek. He turned backwards towards his house.

“Oi Robin!!! You’re SO slow!!” Allen shouted. Another boy with white hair and a slightly different scar on his left eye stumbled out. Fighting to regain his balance while pulling his gloves onto his hands, he hopped out and nearly crashed his head onto the hanging poles that were drying their clothes. Allen kept his face from turning upwards. Robin had a bad sense of time just like Allen’s misdirection senses.

“I know I know dammit,” Robin said while he struggled with his left glove. “Why’re you in such a hurry anyway?”

Allen gave him a broad grin, which looked more like an evil smirk. “Some nobles were bragging how they won most of the card games. I’m going to win some of them,” he said while looking in the direction of the houses where the richer people lived. Robin sighed. Allen would not just win ‘a few games’. He would totally clean out the money the nobles brought with them. Noticing Allen already walking towards the main road, he followed his brother.

They had to cross a large field whenever anyone from the town visited the nobles. The town had spread beyond its original borders. Robin’s heart twinged with guilt knowing what happened prior in this field. Six-year-old Lenalee Lee had vanished in this field nine years ago. Allen was ill then, so he was not there. Robin had spent the day with Lenalee and she went missing the next day. Komui had set up flyers all over town hoping for news of his beloved sister. The best he got was someone had seen Lenalee pick up an apple and went dancing into the woods.

Robin had no idea what happened since then. There were other disappearances recorded in the town too. Some swordsman who was passing through here disappeared one night. He was said to have amazing sword skills and a grace that made his attacks look like dancing. Another was a budding singer who sang a mysteriously soothing melody that enraptured many listeners. He sang non-stop into the night and was never seen after that.

Now he and Allen are making their way through the same field where Lenalee was last seen. When they passed by a part of the forest, he noticed a trail into the dark depths. It was not the unknown that made him stop. It was the shine of gold that caught his eye.

Immediately he called out to his brother. “Allen wait!!” he said. Robin pointed into the trees and darted in. Allen ran in after him. Robin picked up the gold chain and showed it to Allen.

Allen’s light gray eyes went wide with shock. “Lenalee’s.. You don’t suppose…” he started to say but the words were stuck in his throat as he looked into the black abyss beyond. As if reading his mind, Robin glanced the same way. “You want to?” Robin said nothing but the twins went down the trail together, all the while watching out for each other.

The trail, after it went through quite a distance, became a little slippery as the red liquid coating the floor made it hard to walk. Robin almost fell in the slippery substance, all the while trying to hold his breath. The metallic stench in the air made it hard to breathe. And at the end of the red trail, a red door. Allen covered his nose and mouth and pointed instead. Robin got the hint and both ran for the door.

Behind the door was nothing but vines. Thorny vines that were coated in the same red substance as the trail. A gleaming sword lay on the floor. An arm hung out from behind the thick brambles, lifeless and dripping rivers of the dried red liquid.

“Robin, look,” Allen said as he picked up the sword. “It’s cool. Do you think we can just take it?” Without waiting for Robin’s opinion, Allen just picked up the sword. The blade was stained with the same red substance from the arm.

Robin poked the arm. It felt cold. “Eeew… whoever died here, their death wasn’t pretty,” he commented. “Alright, let’s get out of here.”

When the twins left, the arm twitched a little. Kanda’s eyes cracked open a little. “Heh… Nuisances, both of them,” he said, struggling to breathe properly. “Scoot off and leave me alone.”

After walking for a while more, the trail became clean of the red liquid. But along the path, beautiful blue roses bloomed. Allen stopped by to admire some of them. When he was face to face with some of them, he noticed dark purple patches on the roses. Just then, his stomach growled loudly at him. “Robin, do you have food on you?” he asked when he turned around to find his brother but seeing nothing of him. “Robin? Robin!!”

“Here!!” came Robin’s voice from Allen’s left. Allen’s head jerked into the direction of his voice. “Allen, this way.” Allen walked over to where Robin was. A large blue door stood in front of them, framed by the same roses along the trail. Cautiously, Allen touched the door knob. With a surge of confidence, he took hold of it, twisted and pushed the door.

Soft singing greeted them as they walked through the threshold. Looking up they saw a man singing. Fiery red hair covered his eyes but the dark eyepatch covering the right eye stood out obviously behind the hair. The bright orange scarf fluttered lightly with the soft breeze but the image was marred by the dark splashes of red on the body. A large blue rose, streaked with red, bloomed on the chest of the body.

Robin touched the rose with a brush if his fingers. “Allen, this rose is nice isn’t it? It’s prettier than the roses outside,” he said. Allen motioned for Robin to step aside. With a swift upward stroke of the sword from the red door earlier, the rose was neatly cut out from the body. Picking up the rose, Allen handed it to Robin. And they left.

They did not realize that the singing had stopped after they cut out the rose from the body. The face of the body smiled in satisfaction. “Have a happy holiday here kids,” the body whispered. “You’re never going back home.” With the final words, the body crumbled to dust.

The dream watched from the sidelines. The boys had taken the symbols of the two worlds, the sword from the red world and the large rose from the blue world. If they continued going down the road, they’ll reach the green kingdom. It sealed the fourth item in an envelope with the sign of Lenalee’s castle and sent it to them.

A little messenger of green ran up to them. The twins stopped and stared at him. The messenger took no notice and handed the envelope to them. Robin took it.

“It’s an invitation to the castle of the Green Kingdom,” said the messenger and it left.

Robin opened the envelope. Allen leaned in for a closer look. “What is it Robin?” he asked. Robin took out the contents. It was a plain white paper card with the sign of a yellow heart. Allen, being a cheater at poker games recognized it at once. “A Trump of Hearts,” he said. When he looked back at Robin, his brother’s eyes had already turned golden and the golden sign of the heart inked onto the back of his right hand.

The dream watched them go in satisfaction. They were already living in the dream. There was no need to tell them to do anything. The dream just sat back and watched them do as they please.

The brothers ran down the road together. The road turned green when they passed by a green gate. Allen had to blink twice to make sure he was not dreaming. Everything here was green. The people wore green clothes, the roads were made of green bricks, the houses were green and the castle over at the other side of the city was green. One of the citizens recognized the card Robin was holding.

“You have the invitation from the Queen!” the green person exclaimed. “You must make haste to the castle. Queen Lenalee doesn’t like to wait.”

Before Robin or Allen could say a word, the green person proceeded to drag them to the green castle and left them there after saying “Go on in.” Robin took Allen’s hand and both brothers walked into the castle.

Inside the castle was not all green like the outside. The walls were a nice dull yellow and red roses in vases every few steps. Blue borders framed portraits while the corridors were dull emerald green.

“Uh… Ojou-sama,” called Allen. “There’s no one here…” he remarked after there was silence for a few moments.

A green man passed by and saw the card in Robin’s hand. “Oh, that’s the first invitation card I’ve seen after the Queen locked herself up,” he remarked. “Before that we used to get tons of visitors invited to the castle. But we used green clubs.”

Robin listened slowly. “So where might this Queen be? I heard her name was… Lenalee?” he asked.

The green man nodded. “She came to Wonderland when she was very young. Wore a half mask for some reason. Now all she does is lock herself up in her room, refusing to see anyone. Her room’s at the end of the corridor. You can’t miss it.”

Robin thanked the green man and walked down the hall with Allen in tow. A flash of silver caught his eye. A large mirror hung on the wall Robin walked enthusiastically past it. Allen stopped to stare. He brought up his hands and turned them over. His left hand remained red, the reminder of a terrible fire he had been caught in. His right hand remained the same. There was no golden heart on either hand. He suddenly felt left out. Robin would never do anything without Allen. When he received anything, Allen would have half of it. Likewise, Allen treated his brother the same way. Now Robin had the golden heart on his right hand while Allen’s remained the same. It was not fair now. He heard Robin calling him.

“ALLEN!!!” Robin shouted. “You’re slow!!! The door’s here.”

Allen ran to catch up with Robin. A large green door in the shape of an upside down club stood majestically before them. “Lenalee’s inside,” Robin said happily. “After so long, Allen…”

He knocked twice and pushed open the door. The large room was empty. But all the mirrors was turned over to face the wall. Otherwise nothing looked out of ordinary.

“Lenalee?” called Robin. “It’s Robin. You remember me?” There was no answer from the room. Allen scanned the room. There were at least four doors leading out of the room, including the main door which they came through.

“Robin, you take that door,” Allen suggested. “I’ll take this one. It’ll be easier to search for Lenalee if we split up.” Robin went through the door that Allen had pointed while Allen went to the last door. Quiet crying can be heard when he approached it. With no second thoughts, Allen twisted the door knob and pushed open the door.

He saw a girl crying inside, her green hair tied up nicely on her head in pigtails. The girl looked up to see who had entered. “Who’re you…?” she asked in a voice that sounded overused. The red scar on his face was clear to her. “Al… len…? Is it really Allen?”

Allen nodded. “Lenalee,” he merely said. “It’s been a long time.”

Lenalee hastily wiped her face. “Help me Allen,” she pleaded. “Save me. I don’t want to grow old!! I want to stay young!!”

Allen knelt down and said, “If that’s what the Queen wishes for.” He reached up to touch the half mask and placed the sword strategically. With one swift movement, Allen pierced the sword through Lenalee, the sharp blade ripping cleanly through the flesh and the heart. At the same time, he pulled off the mask. Using some of the red blood, he coloured a red heart on the back of his right hand.

“Stay young in eternity, never growing never dying and never living,” Allen said as he left the room.

Robin stormed over, a little irate. “Where have you been?” he demanded. “I haven’t seen Lenalee in either rooms.”

Allen shrugged and smiled. “It’s ok,” he said. “Someone was in the room that I went into. She said that Lenalee is somewhere in the castle. But given the size we may or may not encounter her.” He held out his right hand. “Come on, we still have Wonderland to explore.”

Robin accepted the offer and the twins went off for an adventure of their own. The dream watched contentedly and decided to let them be.

“It’s terrible… He was young.”

“Can’t be helped. This forest has been cursed since the olden days. Consider it his doom when he followed the note.”

“The boy had a future with his voice. Pity really…”

“No singer can resist the ultimate ‘Perfect Song’ as they call it.”

“It was cold. And hard. And set with rigor mortis. And those who knew the body said she was such a pretty girl then.”

“There’s a reason why there’s a saying ‘Always keep an eye on your children’.”

“She only had a brother. Their parents died. And the twin boys too.”

“They were considered lucky to have survived the fire. This time it seemed like their luck had run out.”

“The village isn’t safe!!”

And the dream laughed to itself
