CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS

INDEX

  • - Nakama marker, and thus the highest one that can be achieved. This mark is typically reserved for the crew, but if it pops up elsewhere it means Brook is pretty attached to you.

  • - One or two of these is normal - it just means you give Brook a few scares from time to time. At three he's not sure what to think of you. Five means he dislikes you.

  • - These are relatively easy to get, as Brook loves talking to people. Two is actually default. Three of these means he considers you a friend, and the more you get from there the higher he holds you in esteem.

  • - Opposite of the whale, if you see this icon it means Brook actually doesn't like you. Three makes you a clearcut enemy, and at five he harbors a personal hatred for you.

CANON MATES

"Can you poop?"

The only thing Monkey D. Luffy knew about Brook when he first asked him to be his nakama was that he was a skeleton with an afro that could poop. He accepted him without a second thought, even when the rest of the crew were opposed to it, and had such a refreshing enthusiasm for joy and life that Brook couldn't help but love him just as quickly. They share an appreciation for music and a voracious appetite, as well as a similar sense of humor - Luffy always seems to enjoy his skull jokes.

Aside from how well they get along, Brook also has tremendous respect for Luffy as a captain. He's often in awe of his strength and of just how determined he can be, having seen examples of both at Thriller Bark when Luffy fought first the giant Oars and then the Pirate Warlord Moria in a single night. After everything the crew has been through in Luceti, there are times where he wants to remind him of that when Luffy starts doubting his ability to keep his nakama safe, but as a former captain, he can understand his concerns. Nevertheless, he won't waste an opportunity to try and cheer him up. It's because of this man that Brook is on his way to reuniting with Laboon again; he can't thank him enough, so he'll do it in any way he knows how to.

"From today on I pledge my life to Captain "Strawhat" Luffy! I put myself under your custody!"

"Heh… I see you’ve got bad luck. This crew’s pretty crazy too, you know?"

He’s grateful to the entire crew in general for everything they did for him at Thriller Bark, but Zoro gets a special mention here. It was him who did what Brook couldn’t do for himself there by defeating Ryuuma and thus returning Brook’s shadow back to him - even if he did it more to get a cool sword than he did to help him. He was further more heavily impressed by Zoro’s actions when facing Bartholomew Kuma later on as well, and is one of the few who saw firsthand what happened there. As monstrously strong as Zoro is, it proved that he’s just as human as the rest of them, even if he’ll never admit it. Knowing that, Brook tries to watch out for him when he can.

At first glance, these two probably couldn’t seem more different than they are. Where Brook is exuberant, Zoro is reserved. Despite all of this, they get along remarkably well. Zoro respects him as a swordsman and can offer the skeleton a lot of peace of mind, in a strange way. Brook enjoys his company and was fairly happy to see him back in Luceti, even knowing that it might be best if he were back home instead. There’s no changing that he’s returned, however, and in a way that might be a good thing after all. Zoro’s obvious discomfort to the things the crew has been forced to get used to here is for Brook a stark reminder that this is something he himself has too easily adapted to.

"How much sheer strength must he have?"

"As I was saying, nice for a dead pervert."

Compared to some of the rest of the crew members, Nami and Brook spent relatively little time together back on the Grand Line. She’s too old to take part in some of the antics he shares with their younger nakama, but nowhere near old enough for them to relate well on that either. While most of their interactions revolve around her having to deal with his perverted requests to see her panties, after Thriller Bark they get along fairly well the rest of the time.

Those requests haven’t quite stopped since they’ve come to Luceti, but they’re not as frequent as they used to be. With all of the time they’ve had to get to know each other better, it’s harder for him to see Nami in that kind of light these days. Harder, but not impossible mind you - she and Robin were the first ladies he’d seen in decades, after all, and old habits die hard. But she’s nakama first, and as with the rest of the crew, he’ll do anything he can to protect or make her feel better. Likewise, she’s been a source of comfort to him as well from time to time, and can knock some sense into him. Sometimes violently. But Brook appreciates her company, so he won’t hold that against her.

"O-Oi, you’re not cold are you? Do you have your coat?"

Despite his original fear of him, once they officially became nakama Usopp warmed up to Brook a bit faster than others. They’ve adapted remarkably well with one another in that short time, in every way from how well they can work together in a fight to being complete dorks when in each other’s company. The two of them share the remarkable ability to both depress the hell out of one another and cheer the other up - often times in one conversation. Between Usopp’s pessimism and Brook’s optimism, they balance each other nicely.

Usopp has a tendency to mother-hen Brook (well, everyone actually), which wasn’t something that was too hard to miss after much time. On the one hand this is fairly amusing - he’s old enough to be Usopp’s great-grandfather, so the stubborn old man in him knows full well that he can take care of himself. On the other hand, it’s a very touching gesture and he does appreciate it. Even though Brook still thinks that he worries too much.

"Why are you thanking me? We’re nakama, skeleton."

Sanji gained Brook’s respect very quickly with his actions at Thriller Bark. It may have been Zoro that ultimately faced Kuma in the end, but having seen what happened there, the skeleton knows that Sanji was just as willing to make the same sacrifice. As with the others, Brook is proud to be this man’s nakama. While he’s a bit too mature for him to have a relationship like he does with the younger boys, they get along very well and have a relaxed friendship with one another. This might be in part due to the fact that of all of the crew, it is Sanji that Brook has the most in common with. They both try to behave like gentleman, but Brook knows for a fact that the chef can be just as perverted as he is. Sanji just has more tact. And table manners.

Luceti has shown them that they actually have more in common than previously thought. When Sanji was turned back into a child, he learned that the boy had once had a traumatizing experience that Brook found himself able to relate to in more ways than he would’ve liked. Or at all, for that matter. However, it did bring even deeper meaning to a conversation the two had after Brook’s own experience with the Malnosso when he was hallucinating. By now they’re used to keeping secrets for each other, and it’s because of this that Brook trusts him implicitly.
