Rottie Update

So I've named him "CJ." No real reason why, it just popped into my head and it fit him.

I picked him up from the vet after work. Got him home, took him on a short walk before kenneling him and cleaning out the water bucket. Took a break, then took him on a longer walk, this time wearing him out. Took another break and then took him all the way to one of the ponds at the dump, where he was introduced to the concept of a pond. He didn't seem too familiar with large bodies of water...he was reluctant at first, but then decided he liked the experience.

I'm still putting him on-lead from the house to the dump gate and back, but once we hit the dump gate he now goes off-lead. He sticks pretty close. After the last walk, I took my own short stroll with my mp3 player and then gave him his dinner. The vet said he didn't much take to the Science Diet (I'm not a fan, so I can't blame him). I have to pick up the food C. bought him tomorrow, so tonight he got the Pedigree the other dogs eat. I mixed some dry up with warm water (to help prevent bloat), and added some gooshy food to increase his appetite and rehydrate him. It was hot, he was outside and he's got diarrhea, so I really worry about dehydration, especially with the walks I was taking him on. He laps at water, but didn't seem to really be interested in drinking much after the walks. He wolfed down that food, though. I'm glad I didn't give him much...he'll get another serving of dry tomorrow morning.

He's very...serious. It's almost creepy. I'm so used to Cujo, who was a fucking goofball, and Marissa, the mini-diva, that a dog that's just quiet and serious is kind of...unsettling. He whines and barks to be let out of the kennel when I approach it, but once out he just wanders and pees on things, and then follows me. Once he settles, he may start showing more personality. I've decided to wait until Friday or Saturday to take him to work and get him bathed. I want him settled in a bit more before he spends a day in a new location. I also want C. there so we can see how he'll do getting his nails trimmed.

I've started trying to teach him basic commands. Come, sit, kennel, no. Basic stuff. I never realized how much Cujo and Marissa knew/know before...this guy's completely green. Starting slow...if I tell him "sit" and his butt hits the floor for a nano-second, he gets his food. Once we realize the concept, we'll work on the full sit. I'm holding out hope that neutering him will help curb his marking habit...I've yet to see him pee just to pee. He always marks.

C.'s getting in touch with rescue groups, and putting signs together so we can get this guy a home. She's got his Heartguard and dry food, I'm getting a collar, gooshy food, and some treats. I'm going to suggest that we go dutch on getting him neutered, as I'd like that to be done before he leaves my care. If we get PUPs to help out, it'll only be about $30 bucks.

I'll be getting up extra early tomorrow (last day at the meat market, yay!) so I can take him out for a short stroll and get him some food before I leave for work. Ditto before I leave for TPS.
