Curiouser and curiouser. On some advice I turned on my desktop again this morning... and it booted up. They keyboard worked fine. Then five minutes in the keyboard started doing weird things again, like the F key wouldn't work, or it would think I had CTRL stuck down again. So there's definitely something wrong and I'm gonna start building a new one, but my old one isn't completely dead yet.
Anyway...
On Hachimaki blog there was an
article about how people have started a petition to Bamco over dissatisfaction with Tales. I'm not sure whether frivolous-no-effort-online-petitions are as common in Japan as they are in the US, but what I found interesting/galling is that the petition wasn't for anything specific (like releasing a new version of Vesp on 360), the petition was for Bamco provide a formal apology for perceived slights/insults to Tales fans. Among their
list of complaints:
*Tales releases have gotten too frequent and there's been a drop of quality subsequently, like the presence of numerous bugs in the 10th Anniversary title Abyss
*Ports from minor hardware to other systems within a year with added features, like Symphonia GC->PS2 and Vesp 360->PS3
*Stuff like the original crossover skits in the preorder bonuses 'breaking the image' of series characters
*The character selection in crossover titles (RM, Vs.) is biased and the games break character images
*The increasing presence of inside jokes that only a few people would get
*Numerous preorder bonuses/crossover promotions that ask you to buy music CDs and so on to get content in-game
Some of this is reasonable, like the excessive crossover promotions (Radiant Mythology 2 in particular was awful). But people have complained about stuff like, characters in Tales of Gummi preorder bonus DVDs acting in a way that breaks the image of their characters? Really? And inside jokes offend people?
Many people have valid complaints about Vesperia but this is too much whining. I've often said that while I like Tales, I don't care much for the Tales fan community in the US. I'm starting to think the same way about the community in Japan too. Recently there's been a loooooooooot of bitching. Then again many of the comments on Hachimakiblog's post are along the lines of 'this is excessive' or 'Tales ota are crazy' so maybe the greater community isn't at fault, it's just a small and very VERY vocal minority. Not that Namco isn't to blame either. If they had just originally released Vesp on PS3, and then came out with "Vesperia Director's Cut" later on on the same system, there wouldn't be nearly so many complaints.
