Encrypting The Worm

Link: Wikipedia] newest release, Once Was Not, marks the return of long-missing Cryptopsy vocalist Lord Worm. Being a huge fan of their classic release, None So Vile, I was immensely excited to hear of his return to the Canadian Death Metal legends.
Spending the last eight years as a school teacher (seriously), Lord Worm is back with vengeance. This new offering is a billion times more erratic and chaotic than any previous offering from the Quebecians that I've cared to listen to. It bounces from shred to thumb, pounds the maggots from your rotting mind, and delivers the top notch death metal fans have come to expect.
Early on in the album, I noticed what appears to be a distinct Cephalic Carnage influence. Jumping from heavily distorted chugging to erratic, clean-guitar picking, and back again in a stop-and-go procession, stopping to just a slowing then quickening double-kick pattern, going insane, then repeating it all over again reminds me of Cephalic Carnage before their album Anomalies. Like Cephalic, Cryptopsy manages to do this and still create catchy progressions of sheer brutality; no easy task. This plots Cryptopsy into a subsect of Death Metal called, "Progressive Death." The influence of this non-linear style of playing has reached hardcore as well; a horrible, but unrelated situation.
Once Was Not is a breath of fresh air and a return to life for fans of Cryptopsy's early days when Lord Worm first writhed at the helm. If you like Cephalic Carnage, missed Worm while he was gone, want something to really fuck shit up to, and you're in need of a death metal fix without any of the stale, generic, and standard DeathCore uprisings, do yourself a favor: pick up this release. Its well worth whatever your local metal shop is charging for it. Even if just for the soft jazz - to - brutal, crushing death beginning to 'Keeping The Cadaver Dogs Busy.' This isn't 'Phobophile,' or 'Graves of the Fathers' for that matter, but it damn well isn't LaCrouix or DiSalvo either. Enjoy.
