BJP in Bangalore part two - Karnataka elections coverage part three

Apr 08, 2008 15:43

"Bangalore South is not as Brahmin-dominated as you think", Rajeev Gowda had told me about two years back. "There are an equal number of Vokkaligas here. So I do have good chances of winning". Unfortunately for Prof. Gowda, Basavanagudi, where he lives, is currently represented by former mayor K Chandrashekar, another Congress Vokkaliga.

Its very good analysis and essentially raealistic
but I think this time Chandrashekhar may have a tougher time.
This time his opponent is a fresh faced youngster and self made person.
Do you know that both of the major candidates in Basavanuguddi Ravi Subramanya and Chandrashekar are school mates .
LAst time Chandrasheka had faced non-residents and tired old people .

The wind is towards change though

As I had predicted Ravi Subramanya won . I was aware that srinagar consituency would vote heavier . Why wouldnn;t they when many of them got in new age fashion through emails. Ravi is one of th efirst ones to use in a very interesting fashion internet for his campaign in minor fashion . Which was to get the folks to vote. It provided that extra bump needed. I made my proposal to both chandrashekar and ravi but Ravi was more open to change and it benefitted to him.
I think by 2009 we shall see internet playing a more bigger role.

Pramila Naisergi is also an upset win lost because she was reported to have made loose mother son comment in chrysties case and 10000 pamplets were distributed on that by harassed husbands association which is very strong in Vijayanagar constituency their headquarters ashakiran in vijaynagara .

how much impact do you think your online campaign had on Ravi's victory? I mean, considering that his margin was a huge one - 13,000 votes.

the story i heard is that vokkaligas were anyways against chandrashekar and ravi's brahmana mahasabha plank got him the brahmin votes and so he won.

of course - that doesn't say much about your online campaign but the fact that his website has seen only 300 odd hits says it wasn't too successful.

can you elaborate on the methods that you used in your online campaign?

I agree that online campaign didnt play much role in Basavanagudi. There are many reasons why Ravi won.The vokkaligas were against Chandrashekar as you said. The brahmins have been traditionally BJP voters who were lured away by Chandrashekar to some extent last time. This time they returned to BJP.More over Ravi has involved himself with social service in Srinivas nagar area for nearly 15 to 20 years and has had lot of support from people from all walks of life in that area though never tried to seek publicity(This is so much in contrast to Chandrashekar who never lets go of any opportunity to grab publicity).Ravi is known in that area for his helping nature, simplicity and good manners. He has no enemies with in his party unlike chandrashekar whose own party members were fed up with him. Then there was anti devegowda vote.Everything came in handy and helped Ravi win with a huge margin.
