This Is Broken: Refrigerators

Jun 27, 2005 17:00

Due to recent events, the subjects of refrigerators, air-conditioners, and energy efficiency have been on my mind. And thus I ask:

In the winter, when it is cold outside, we heat our homes in order to be comfortable, then keep a well-insulated cold box inside our kitchens. Why not just import the cold from outside our homes?

In the summer, when it is warm outside, we cool our homes in order to be comfortable, then keep a well-insulated cold box inside our kitchens that exhausts heat into the homes we are trying to keep cool. Why not vent the heat outside?

I mean, it's a huge change in fridge design, sure. But doesn't it make sense? Tell me I'm wrong.
