DUDE!! BEING ON VARSITY VOLLEYBALL ROCKS! I GOT MY NAME IN THE PAPER FROM A COUPLE OF THE GAMES! SWEET! ill copy down the story, but if you see something written in stars (*) it's something that i'm commenting about.

"LADY CRUSADERS IMPRESSIVE DURING FIRST TOURNAMENT DESPITE SPLIT - BY LOREN KOPFF
LAKEWOOD - when Kim Holliday *my aunt/coach!* saw the bracket to the prestigious annual Molton/Gahr Volleyball Classic, she wasn't very pelased to see her Valley Christian team seeded either out of the eight teams fromt he Gahr pracket. Then the first-year head coach saw her team get swept by Los Alamitos last Friday in the first round.
But through the first four matches, with one more played on Sept. 17, the Lady Crusaders have held their own, splitting the four after losing to Mayfair this past Monday night 25-21, 25-19, 16-25, 25-21. If Holliday had her way, Valley would have been playing on the winner's side of the bracket but she still isn't too disappointed by her team's play thus far. 'I would be more satisfied if we were 3-1 and i feel like it should have been,' Hollidays said, 'We just got a slow start tonight and had some rough times with our setter.'
Holliday was referring to senior defensive specialist Sydney Shaw who was put to the talk of being the setter because senior Katie Zondervan, the number one setter and team captain, injured her left ankle early in the third game of Saturday's match with Torrance. Zondervan is schedualed to return to action tonight when Valley hosts St. Paul.
'She's an excellent setter,' Holliday said. 'I really didn't feel nercous about having to put her in. Katie is an amazing setter but i know that Sydney can get the job done and she proved it tonight.'
Shaw filled in great against the Monsoons and kept her team close throughout the match. With the score tied at 6-6 in the first game, Mayfair pulled away and lead 22-14 before the Lady Crusaders made a small rally. a net werce from Ashley Dahlenburg game the ball back to Valley where junior middle clocker Stephanie Brink served five straight points to pull Valley within two. HOwever, Mayfair's 6'2" *that makes Ian look short....* Kate Fruhwirth put down two kills to end the game.
It was almost the same in the second game as the two teams stayed close early one. There would be four ties, with the last coming at 11-11. With Shaw serving, Fruhwirth added to her kill total to give the Monsoons the lead for good. Mayfair finally pulled away when Kim DeHaas served seven straight points only to see sophomore outside hitter *HEY im a RIGHT SIDE HITTER THANK YOU VERY MUCH!* Kelsee Larsen almost return the favor with five consecutive points of her own. But a net serve ended that rally and gave the last point to the home team. 'I expect teams in our league to be very much like this match,' Holliday said. 'I think us and Mayfair were eventually matched although i feel we should have come on top.'
In the third game, Valley raced to a 13-6 lead and never looked back. Brink had a pair of aces to help Valley forge that big lead. Mayfair would come to within 20-16 after Larsen served long, but a hitting error from Dahlenburg game Valley the possession and from there, junior outside hitter Melissa Boer served the final four points including an ace. In the fourth, the Monsoons were looking to put the match away after leading by a 21-10 count. However, senior outside hitter *who btw is ALSO a right side, the person i sub in for. geez, Loren, get it right buddy!* Courtney Simmer began to bring Valley back little by little. She served two points before turning the ball over to Mayfair. After DeHass served wide, Boer got four more points back to make the score 23-20. Boer ended the match with a team-high 16 kills while sophomore middle blocker Jenise DeBie added seven.
The Lady Crusaders began the rounament with a 25-155, 25-11, 25-19 loss to Los Alamitos. Valley was down 9-0 in the first game and never regrouped despite pulling to within five at 14-9. In the third game, a kill by Zondervan gave her team a brief 18-17 lead. But with Kara Uhl serving, Rachael Moss had four kills plus an ace from Uhl to put the match away. Boer led Valley with nine kills.
In last Saturday morning's match with La Habra, Zondervan has 50 assists *sets* as the Lady Crusaders survived a tough match with the Highlanders 19-25, 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 15-15. Boer had 22 kills and was responsible for the final two points of the match. Her last kill was barely inside the black line to give the Valley possession. Then with Debie serving, Boer put up a clock to end the marathon. DeBie added 17 kills and senior outside hitter Ashley Deffebach added six kills; those three players have been the offensive spark that Holliday has been counting on since the beginning of the summer.
'I think they're going to step up their game even more but I think this level of play really is good experience for them,' Holliday said. 'I think Melissa Boer is a prime example of someone who never gices up defensively. We saw her pick up stuff [against Mayfair] that the crowd already thought was already going down.'
Later in the day, against Torrnance, the story wasn't the 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 victory but instead the injury to Zondervan. With Simmer serving and Valley trailing 6-5 after an ace, Zondervan collided with a TOrrance player under the net on the far side. the Torrance player landed on top of Zondervan's ankle. Torrance was called for four hits on the play. After that, Boer quickly put down two straight kills as part of a six-point falley for Valley. Shaw came in to replace Zondervan and despite Torrance taking a brief 12-10 lead, Larsen's erving made sure the Lady Crusaders would win this one for their falled captain. With Larsen serving, Deffebach had a kill, then combinded with Debie on a block. Later on, BOer and Debie would combine on another block to make the score 19-14, and moments later an ace from Debie game Valley some breathing room at 22-15. Boer and Deffebach each had nine kills while DeBie added six. Valley will compete in the Mayfair Tournament all day on Saturday then host Lynwood on Tuesday. *that means you ALL better come to the home game this tuesday!!!!*
*the rest of this has nothing to do with Valley, but since im quoting the story, ill put it down 'case you're interesting in reading a little about the other teams.*
Meanwhile, Garh is off to an unusial, but somewhat expected start. For the first time in the 18 years that Sonney Okamoto *a VERY BAD COACH to let you know. yells at the team players AND the parents if he doesn't get what he wants.* has been the head coach, the Gladiators have started the season 0-4. Gahr began the new campaign with a 25-18, 25-6, 25-21 loss to Redondo last Friday. Early Saturday morning, the Gladiators were on their way to win when they led Torrance 2-0 after posing wins of 25-23 and 25-20. But Torrance came back to win the next three games 25-7, 25-17, 15-8. Later in the day, La Habra swept the blue and gold 25-12, 25-18, 25-23 and two days later Pacifica added to Gahr's losing streak with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-23 victory. In that match, junior outside hitter Monica Cordova led Gahr with 16 kills while sevior outside hitter Iris Murray added five. Garh played Whitney on Sept. 17 and will host Ocean View on Monday."
