...here's a very good case in point in FAVOR of our 'hood.
Doorbell rang. Normally we don't get many unannounced visitors, so when it does we know something's up. Throw on clothes, head down, one of the neighbor's kids is pointing at the Nissan - getting towed (it hadn't moved in way too long). Pointed me to the officer who was overseeing this, who pointed me to the tow operator, who was very quick at willing to cut a deal to take the car to a repair shop instead of the impound for far less that the fees for impound - the officer, satisfied in this, even said he'd throw out the ticket.
But this started with an alert neighbor keeping an eye on for us. I bet there's many places on Park Ave. or in Pittsford where ya won't get that - and plenty of reasons why you'd want them watching. We stay outta everyone else's business and generally keep an eye on stupid shit - for instance when some guy was coming door to door trying to identify computer parts (pretty clear sign if he had one and didn't know what it was asking in that fashion, it was stolen). We got that one.
Can't imagine anyone dumb enough to start shooting around here would get away with it for long - the cops ARE very responsive to the neighborhood and the citizens in many cases I don't think are armed too shabbily themselves in the interest of keeping the peace. Sure, go a neighborhood or two over and you'll find some pretty ugly shit, but right here we're living about as good as you can in the City.
