Story question... stop me if you've heard this one...
I have an idea, and I'm curious if it is a story you've seen before in a book, movie, TV program, or game.
A number of doorways are opened from our world to other worlds. In order to close a doorway, the protagonist(s) must travel to the other world and recover an item, a key of some sort, either something we would recognize as a key, or just some object that fits in the opening that controls the doorway.
