Guild Wars is no longer exciting. Eve Online was beautiful and fun for a while, but it lacked any sort of reward to keep me wanting to play. WoW never really was, without real life friends to play with. Warhammer was excellent until I hit level 40 and things could still kill me in 1 hit, all the while the game had unpatched, annoying graphical glitches that made playing the game impossible to enjoy. Shadowbane was lame. City of Heroes was amusing, but seemed like 90% was filler and the other 10% was getting new travel powers and costume pieces. Guild Wars 2 finally peaks its head out of vaporware with a teaser trailer that looks pretty, but I'm afraid they're going to screw up and pull Lore out of their asses like they have with everything from the beginning of Guild Wars. I'm willing to give it a try... Aion is taking way too fucking long to launch in the US, and I'm losing interest.
What else is coming out? Blizzard keeps releasing crap for World of Warcraft, and they're right to keep feeding that animal. If they play their cards right, the game could last another 5 years or more. Unless they rewrite all the graphics for the entire game, and not just one section, I doubt I could get into it.
It's a shame. So few good games are out on PC. Left 4 Dead is good, but Steam achievements lack the addictive nature of Xbox 360 achievements.
I'm glad I bought an Xbox 360 this year. Games are casual enough to put down when I get frustrated with them, without really losing anything. Multiplayer is satisfying to keep me playing. Achievements add so much fun to games.
Speaking of Xbox 360, I just bought Rock Band 2, thinking I'd hate playing drums, and was wrong. Drums are the most fun instrument to play. I also recently download Shadow Complex after hearing that it would probably get a game of the year award. Very glad I did. Co-Op said it played in a way that reminded you of Super Metroid, and I agree. It's now in my favorite list. Gears of War 2 is very replayable, now that I've hooked up with Andy and his friends who usually play on weekends. Fable 2 is still replayable. I forgot that I never played through as a completely evil character and found a few amusing miniquests that were unavailable to me as a "good" character.
So I've once again become more of a casual gamer. I still play my casual games all day when I'm off. I just can't stand to devote hours, days, weeks, or months to one unrewarding game.
I can see why developers have tried (and failed) over and over to incorporate an FPS with an MMO. I'm trying to imagine what Gears of War 2 would be like. ... Then I realize that's my main gripe about MMO's. In a way they're too big. There's too much to do and too little structure. I like how Gears randomly matches you with 4 other players and dumps you into a map and sends the hoard out.
Anyway. I must be getting old. I see how pointless neverending video games are :( Ignorance was bliss, but then I awoke and realized just how lonely I was.
