Reminiscient of "Mad Men"

"Relax and enjoy four to five cups a day
  • Drinking a cup of coffee is one of life's small but regular pleasures. It is reassuring to know that moderate coffee consumption - of four to five cups a day - is perfectly safe for the general population and may have some benefits to your health.
  • Not only is coffee a good source of antioxidants, it can also count towards the six to eight cups of assorted drinks you should drink every day to keep your body hydrated.
  • So sit back, relax and enjoy that cup of coffee!

From a bag of Tesco's Original Fresh Coffee Beans. It's also plastered in Rainforest Alliance badges (but only contains 30% Certified Content, hmmm...)

This reminds me strongly of the first few episodes of Mad Men, where they're all stressing about the fact they can no longer advertise the health benefits of smoking, because Reader's Digest has just run an article on how smoking kills. Very amusing, and of course voices the opinion that "people have a death wish", and they'll do things that are bad for them anyway. And indeed that the function of advertising is to assure people that they're going to be ok.

It's an excellent bit of TV, this; of course, the social mores are unbelievably horrid to modern eyes, but the writers have got some very good lines up their sleeves. And it looks gorgeous, too. I've only seen the first three episodes, but plan on watching the rest soon.

And no, I probably don't drink 4-5 cups per day... more like 4-5 mugs. I know it's bad for me, and I believe in being informed about such things; I just don't like to be hoodwinked into believing that "it's ok really". It's not, I'm doing damage to my heart and my nervous system, but I like it this way. I've kicked the habit once or twice, it wasn't fun, and I never stopped craving it.

On the plus side, I don't smoke, I don't tan, and I don't use any other addictive substances regularly enough to matter. I think that balances out as a win, overall.
