tails_redux suggested the following topic:
"Discuss entertaining avenues for the celebration of (straight) male sexuality within neo-burlesque." and then added the following qualifier:
"Not really an out and out question - more a subject for discussion. The burlesque nights I've been involved in have a scattering of male acts - usually one strip/tease plus maybe a freakshow/fakir or standup/poetry performance. The majority of our punters are female and would like to see more male acts, but haven't really got a clue what they want."
I agree with the final sentence, actually... in part, we haven't seen anything that makes us sit up and think: "more of that please!", and in part, I guess we're not usually considered a prime market for such fare. I do wonder why it is that women form the majority at burlesque shows (I wouldn't like to lay money on it, but my impression from the nights I've been to is that women form at least 50% of the audience)... do we go to ogle the girls, then?
I also feel that, with the male acts I've seen, unless they're doing something relatively innocuous such as singing bawdy songs, any hint of seduction or sexuality is just, well, cringe-worthy. Cue various "chav strippers" and such... who in their right mind actually wants to see that? Who, moreover, wants to admit being turned on by it?
Is this really the same question as the one about men not really getting into dance, especially ballet, without a good deal of determination and hard work? In general, we don't see straight males as "seductive", more as seducers, audience rather than performer.
