Hey, I got your call last night about it, but I was on my way out the door and running late as it was when I got the message...

What operating system are you running? If it JUST started when you got the cable internet installed, I'm wondering, did they also install a network card in your computer? If they did, the card may have the ability to sense network activity and turn itself on if it detects a certain amount of activity...I'd have to look at it to see if that's what it is...that's the only reasonable explanation I can give for a computer turning itself on. There's no other thing that could cause a computer to turn on without you physically pushing the button.

Im running ME. I had a network card in there as I've had it connected to cable internet before, but Tim put in a new hard drive, and I'm wondering if the network card didn't get re-installed.

How do I stop it, or is this one of those "J has to come and look at it then I have to buy dinner" type of things :) ??

haha...I'd have to take a look at it...I don't know ME very well, but I'll ask the guys at work if they have any other ideas...

So this didn't start until you moved into the new place, and after the hard drive was installed and the cable internet hooked up?

Yep.

Well, Tim installed the hard drive about a year and a half ago, and I think I used the cpu on dial up after that, but not the network card or cable internet. It never turned on like this before I moved and got the cable internet hooked up.

The network password thing started comming up when he was connecting the modem, too, so it very well may have something to do with the card. I don't know how to get rid of that, either.

Until I figure it out, I'm just pulling the power cord after I shut it down.

The network login is a normal thing when you're actually connected to a network, so that's not a big deal...I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the network card...Here are a couple things to look at:

1. How long after you shut down does the computer turn back on?
2. Watch the cable modem when it does turn back on...There should be 3 different lights, one that's a steady on to indicate that it has sync up with the cable, one that indicates a connection to the computer, and one that will blink when there's network activity. See if one of them starts blinking just before the computer turns on.

What kind of cable modem is it, by the way? It might actually be the modem.

I don't know what kind of modem it is. I got it from them. There is about 6 different lights on it, though

It turns on hours after I turn it off. Usually I'll turn it off, do other stuff for an hour or two, then leave. It's then on when I get back after work. Yesterday, I turned it off, and it turned back on about 2 1/2 hours or so after I originally turned it off. We're talking hours here, not minutes.

I'll look at the brand of modem when I go over there tonight and let you know.
