The spiders came over the crest of the hill, fire dribbling from their snouts in excitement. The stabbing points of their legs found deep purchase in the soft farmland earth as they came closer. I like this one, although with the first few sentences I found myself thinking back to "Kingdom of the Spiders" (I think that was what it was called, anyway), a movie from the '70s starring William Shatner.

Oh, I remember Kingdom of the Spiders. That movie scared the hell out of me. Of course, it's ridiculous now. I got over my fear of that movie by imagining behind the scenes footage in my head of all the fake spiders and actors no screaming anymore once the director yelled 'cut'. It got me interested in special effects, actually. I didn't go down that route but I sure wanted to for a while.

Yeah, well, this story evolved as I was writing it so the spider started out as biological and then became mechanical. Glad you liked it, though.
