Return of the two-chapter story!
Duel 43 & 44: Monster Fight!!
(Kame Game store)
Sugoroku: Now that I'm out of the hospital, it's time to start pushing new collectable games again. Monster Fighter is an advanced version of Rock-Em Sock-Em Robots.
Jonouchi: I see, each of the fighting guns makes half the ring, and the various monsters attachable to it have different moves. And you punch these buttons to make it fight?
Yugi: I've chosen mine, let's play!
Jonouchi: Ow! If my monster is hit in its weak point, my buttons won't work for two seconds!
Sugoroku: Now pull the trigger with the finishing move!
Yugi: I win. Big surprise.
Jonouchi: I like this game, and will shill for it at school.
(school)
Yugi: Behold, I and Jonouchi have a new game.
Random Student: This must be what all the cool kids are playing. I will buy one.
Narrator: A week later, Monster Fighter is the hottest collectible going.
Yugi: Maybe too hot. All of the stores have sold out, and I fear kids will go to unseemly lengths to get it.
(hallway)
Nagumo: Observe my death-spider muscle shirt and vaguely-spiderlike hair. Could it be that I'm a new opponent for Yugi?
Random Student: I've heard Nagumo is a thief, but you notice I'm standing all the way over *here* out of reach when I say that.
(roof)
Nagumo: I have a Monster Fighter set and want to play with you, Yugi.
Yugi: Okay, even though you are a bizarrely-attired adult who wandered into my school and asked to meet me alone, I do not suspect you of an ulterior motive. Let's play.
Nagumo: To no one's surprise, my monster is Wild Spider. Oh, and new rule, if I win, I get your fighting gun and monster.
Yugi: Say what? OOF!
Nagumo: Oh, did I mention that it's okay to hit the other player? Well, it is, and so long sucker.
(classroom)
Jonouchi: So, you're saying there are people who go around stealing Monster Fighter games?
Honda: Yes, and that's my plot exposition for this chapter.
Yugi: Hey guys, I need to ask you for a mysterious favor.
(gym storeroom)
Nagumo: Hah, this is the life. I swipe kids' toys, then sell them to other kids. Next week, I'm on the Apprentice!
Yami: I'm here for my rematch.
Nagumo: Wow, you tracked me all the way to this outbuilding on the school grounds with the line of customers. I really underestimated your intelligence.
Yami: This match is best of three. Oh, and it's a Shadow Game.
Nagumo: Sure, sure. Now I'll pull the "attack the user" trick.
Yami: Bad move. That leaves your monster open. My monster goes in for the uppercut, but *your* chin takes the damage. That's Monster Fighter, Shadow Game style!
(Commercial Break! Hey, kids, giving comments in Livejournal is just like buying the toys you see on the show!)
Yami: To reiterate, when our monsters would take damage, our bodies feel it instead.
Nagumo: That sort of explains the cracks on my jaw. Except that skin doesn't crack like that.
Yami: Best two of three, ready?
Nagumo: Yep, I'm willing to actually play the game square, thanks to my street training. I am still underestimating you however, believeing that you've never been in a fight.
(much fighting in which Yugi shows his superior skills. Eventually, Nagumo resorts to cheating again by kicking Yugi, and manages to have his monster land several body blows.)
Yami: Okay, now I'm angry. I'm removing my shirt to reveal the leather and straps underneath, and the big depressions in my torso where the monster hit. Oh, and I'm cranking this Shadow Game up to 11.
Nagumo: Ooh, I'm so scared, not. Apparently I'm not very bright, or I'd flee now.
(more fighting, Yugi still demonstrating his superior skill)
Nagumo: Well, looks like I'll just have to cheat again.
Yami: think you'll find it a little hard to kick me.
Nagumo: Huh? All the monsters are clinging to my legs, including my Wild Spider. But if that's Wild Spider, what's on the playing field?
Yami: It's your soul, Nagumo, twisted into a spider shape. And now my monster demolishes your monster. And we all know what that means.
Nagumo: (dies screaming)
Yami: I wonder how long it will take them to find the body?
Next time: Anzu channels the Silver Age Lois Lane.
(Edit to add that Nagumo turns out not to be dead after all. He reappears in the Battle City arc as the creep in the alley that Kaiba smashes with Obelisk to test the Egyptian God Card under field conditions.)
