Sabrina the Teenage Witch #61

Another issue of the mangafied version of this comic book. The dilemma set up by the cover is dealt with in the first three pages. The more pressing problem is new student Gwenevive, who claims to be a witch. She can't actually be a witch, since she doesn't know any of the codewords or secret handshakes, but if that's the case, how is Gwenevive pulling off those amazing tricks?

Gwen is interesting in that she's a stereotype (chubby "alternative religion" girl), but one that hasn't been seen in Archie Comics before, or indeed very often in any mainstream comics. And she ends the issue as a continuing character. This is a different relationship for Sabrina than she's had before, a "mortal" who knows her secret.

Sabrina shows some of her less appealing character traits this issue (indecisiveness, jealousy, vindictiveness) but stays on the side of the angels.

The love polygon simmers, with Harvey ascending this issue, and Aunt Hilda's political ambitions get a mention. Writer Tanio del Rio does a good job with continuity, though it's likely most of it will be reset when she leaves.
