So, it was D&D Day today. The Source had the new 4th Edition books on sale as soon as their contract said they could, but today was for demos of the new system. I actually got there pretty late in the afternoon, so the worst crowds had already cleared out, but Dave Arneson was still there and signing.
And then I tried out the new system. To be honest, I've never actually played 3.5 (finally got all the core books when they were half price), so I can't compare too much. I can say that even at first level, the characters are pretty darn buff.
The scenario was very basic, with little of the "role" part of roleplaying required. Naturally, I tried to get into character (a mercenary fighter) as much as possible because that never hurts. With a little tactical planning and some spectacularly good rolls by the rogue's player (a relative newbie who hadn't quite got the hang of 'in character dialogue') we blitzed the big baddie battle in record time.
We got to keep our miniatures, character sheets, and 1d20, which was a nice touch.
By the by, any local people want to go to Free RPG Day?
