Freyja has an integral part both in my identity and in my path, and has done for maybe 5 years or more now. Through her I became Heathen, through her I find the strength to succeed.
I have been looking to commemorate her in an artwork of some sort a while. There was a wood carver selling on Ebay who had a stylised Freyja work I admired and I was tempted to see if he would partially redesign a carving of her for me on commission. But I have not been able to find his work recently.
By chance I found an original painting of Freyja and representing the most famous object associated with her (The Brísingamen necklace) so famous that it even gets a mention in Beowulf as a great treasure, although the association with her is broken in that citation.
Wikipedia cites the origin of the word as: ‘from Old Norse brisinga "flaming, glowing" and men "jewellry, ornament"
So this is an interpretation of Freyja, complete with necklace. It resonates well with me, a more restful yet energised image of her. She who was also known as Shield, and She Who Protects (in the original Skjalf…)
For all her beauty, and features of war (when necessary, and even then her hand is not the one that slays, but the one that gathers those worthy of the next lifes bounty)
I think this is something worthy of sharing, and more than worthy of keeping with me and on display to show that side of her I know tenderly.
