it was a long and stressful day at work and people are all rushing to get home. tao has decided to skip the push and shove of the crowd at the train station today. hailing a cab is much more convenient anyway (despite standing outside the heat of the late afternoon). he pulls his phone out and checks the time, 5:45pm. he had been waiting for 20 minutes for a cab and he's getting impatient. he just wants to go home and crash on his bed and call it a day but he can't. he's sure the traffic's building up too and that just frustrates him more.
but then he sees him.
tao tries not to panic. but he finds it silly how he suddenly fumbles for his phone and pretends to type. he finds he can't breathe well when he sees him getting closer but he tries to calm down.
their break up had happened 8 months ago and ever since then, tao pretends that he doesn't see him when they cross paths like this. pretends that the 2 years weren't the happiest he has been..they have been. pretends that the man walking closer towards him didn't make him feel special. he lets out a breath he didn't notice he was holding in when the man walks past him.
tao would be lying if he said that it didn't hurt. how the man he once loved so much (maybe he still does) doesn't notice him anymore. doesn't so much as give him a glance.
he checks the time, 5:48pm. just then, he sees a cab and hails it.
he just really wants to call it a day.

(what tao doesn't know and what tao wasn't able to witness was that he saw him too. right before he crossed the street. kris couldn't miss him, not when tao's carrying his signature purple umbrella. he gave that to him during his birthday last year. along with the most delectable cake he could find. right before the break up.
as he walks closer, kris pretends, too. he pretends that he's not walking towards the man who he has loved for 2 years and he's sure he still does. pretends that he's not walking past the man he loved to kiss for hours on end. pretends that his heart doesn't feel heavy because all he wants is to look up at him, to have their gazes meet. but as usual, he was busy with his phone and kris still thinks it's cute.
but he takes a chance and looks at his direction.
just one glimpse. he misses him, he really does. but that's all they can do right now. pretend that they didn't exist before in each others' life.
kris just wants to go home, call it a day. he checks the time, 5:49pm.)
